Aloha to all,
I am an expatriate Kiwi living in Hawaii. I have been attempting to find information on how I might possibly relocate to Niue & if the skills my partner & I have might be put to good use.
My partner is a Certified Nurses Assistant with experience in horticulture & the operation of tourist accommodation. I am a trade certified carpenter with 27 years experience in all facets of construction including architectural design, CAD draughting, project management & basic plumbing & electrical. I have a particular interest in sustainable living including alternative energy production, alternative waste disposal, eco architecture
& organic vegetable production/permaculture. I am also a competent mechanic & have worked as a commercial fisherman & hunter.
Both my partner & I are flexible & merely wish to provide a better quality of life for our children than is offered in the so called "civilised" west.
Looking forward to any replies/info

What a fascinating message board -- but no posts since March 16, 2008. I was drawn to Nuie by an e-mail spam suggesting I purchase a .NU website. Never knew Nuie existed before that. If I posted m y e-mail address here, would someone write to tell me what life is like on Nuie? ennisjoslin@hotmail.com

have you tried other pacific islands too? or is it only Niue that interests you? I suppose that would be a good idea if you visit the island to get hands on knowledge about the island, people & culture for yourselves :)

Niue sound like the Dutch word for New Start... which would be appropriate. I have a new zealand passport because my Dad was a new zealander. Maybe a silly reason - but the fact that there are so few inhabitants, makes both of us wonder whether our many handy skills could be put to better use in Niue than in the Netherlands. Such as fixing engines, computers, laying electricty or plumbing, carpentry, and cooking. For sure we first plan to visit Niue and figure whether Niue would be the right place to settle.

Hi Stellajane, good to know your interests, I've never been to the Netherlands so can't comment on your fustrations etc .. what makes you choose Niue over other Pacific Islands? have you tried other islands as well? or just Niue?

DESALINATION: Dutch firms develops high efficiency solar distillation unit

In 2003, Zonnewater BV (The Netherlands) developed a prototype
desalination unit based on solar energy (95% thermal solar energy and
5% photovoltaic or wind energy), suited for coastal areas with an
average temperature of 30 deg Celsius or higher. The prototype, installed on the
Caribbean island of Bonaire, is a small 1 m3 greenhouse-type
construction that produces 40 liters of water per day (lpd). The
company says that 50 lpd per m3 is possible if use is made of internal
condensation. The only competitor, Zonnewater claims, is a Japanese
model that produces 10 lpd per m3. The unit consists of a glass
greenhouse connected to a similar unit made of concrete and painted
white. The high efficiency rate is a result of specialized electronic
equipment used to enhance air circulation between the two sections.
Periodic washing with salt water reduces the negative effect of solar
reflection by the salt produced by the unit. In the next development
phase, Zonnewater plans to optimize the design, develop a marketing
strategy and reduce costs by using other (cheaper) materials.

Proud Niuean;

I am aware of the Peruvian slave traders who took away Niueans, but little is heard of where this people were, and their descendants. One Niuean went on study to the US once and said that there may be some information at the US Census Bureau. There are Niueans descendants in TI but little documentation, a relative went up there once and met with people who claims that they are Niueans.

What happened to our missing ancestors who were taken away by force to work in gold mines in Peru or anywhere else in the world during the 1860s and onwards?I believe that some of our people were married to other races.

I heard that some of the Niueans were working in the pearl industry at the top end of Australia, especially Thursday Island[TI] during the late 1800s and the early 1900s.

These are the people we look to bring back to Niue to increase our population problem.

I hope that somebody I believe should do a research in the coming future to trace our missing ancestors or what actually happend to them and the families they left behind!

Thank you...

As we remembered the Niuean soldiers who represented the country during the first world war we should not forget those who did not returned to their families after the war.

Some of them were buried at sea,Egypt,UK,and New Zealand and never return to their country of birth during the war.

Go to this site and read the names of the Niue Toas who represented their country Niue.

There is an ongoing concern about empty houses in Niue, as this may contribute to some health risks especially if these houses are not maintain properly, should be clear of weeds and rats. At the moment there is a local business in Niue who can maintain the weeds around your house on a monthly basis. If you are interested in using these services, drop us a line on komutas1@xtra.co.nz, so we can send you some more information. In Niue a house is only safe for human habitat if it is maintain properly, otherwise empty houses which are not maintained falls under the abandoned category. NBN can also assist you in repairing your house, adding toilet and showers and even manage it if you can rent it out.

A Service of NBN
