The progress on the new building for Hearing and Service Dogs of Minnesota is humming right along... We anticipate a move in date of late January. However, we find we're are needing MANY volunteers to help with an upcoming project. If we can find the volunteers, we'll definitely save costs for the building. On Saturday, Dec 5 and Sunday Dec 6 we will have professional painters in to prime all the walls. We need volunteers (hopefully some Lions!) to help assist them with cutting in around doorways and windows, helping with dropcloths, painting the smaller offices w/rollers and brushes. When they do the final paint job on the next weekend - Saturday Dec 12 and Sunday Dec 13, we'll need volunteers to help then also. If any of the clubs can help we would certainly appreciate it! The building is in New Hope. please contact our volunteer coordinator Laurie Carlson at lcarlson@hsdm.org or 612-729-5986 x113 for more information. Thank you!

From Lion Bruce Billington with Project New Hope:

This needs to go out to all that will listen..........PNH and ties to Ft. Hood.

Michelle and Marlon Reynolds have become the face of Project New Hope within the Lions Club. They have been featured in two videos produced by Lion Clubs International and spoke on behalf of PNH at the International Convention.

The unit that was hit is the unit that Marlon is deploying with. Marlon had just left the building not minutes before everything happened. Marlon is very shook up!!!! Michelle does not know what that means for Marlon......if the unit will still deploy or not. Michelle did say that she will need a strong dose of PNH at the December retreat.

Please be thinking of the families that have lost loved ones and Michelle and Marlon. THANK GOODNESS THAT MARLON JUST LEFT THE BUILDING !!!!!!!!

Take care

Dear Lions,

The following is a partial copy of a note received recently from DG Jeannine Windels (5M11)

Our beautiful, talented, fun loving daughter-in-law "Pastor Nancy" has recently been diagnosed with advanced stage lung cancer. (Non-small cell lung cancer, the most likely type to strike non-smoking younger women, already at Stage 3B-Stage 4 level of progression.) Nancy will be 48 later this month; she is married to our oldest son Bob, and they have three daughters, 17, 19 and 20. She is an associate pastor at Normandale Lutheran Church in Edina; Bob is youth director at Gethsemane Lutheran in Hopkins; and they live in Eden Prairie.

Nancy started chemo Tuesday in a clinical trial at the Mayo Clinic -- the survival rate for lung cancer this advanced is low but the hope is that the chemo will give her some more quality time. As a pastor, she has ministered to many people in similar situations. Nancy has a very strong faith and is fully prepared for what lies ahead. She has the love and support of not only her family and friends, but the congregations of both churches and so many others whose lives she has touched.

We ask that you keep Nancy and our whole family in your thoughts and prayers in the months ahead. And in Nancy's own words: "Please hold your loved ones and cherish every moment, for we are so poignantly aware of how precious this present is."

At the Multiple Convention May 1, 2 & 3 in Bloomington MN, there will be a silent auction with the proceeds going to the Diabetes Foundation.

Please send smaller items directly to the Convention Chairperson:

Wayzata MN 55391

If you have a larger item to donate that you will bring with you, please send Lion Mike the information about the donation and about how much space might be needed to display it.

Fellow Lions,

I am writing today with the news of the passing of PDG Bill Harkins.

PDG Bill had been battling congestive heart failure this fall, and had been in the hospital since Thanksgiving. He had been doing better, and just this week, was transferred to a care facility here in town. He was there only a few days before his condition significantly deteriorated. He returned to Rochester late in the week and passed away on Friday.

PDG Bill's daughter indicates services will likely be on Saturday January 3. Details aren't yet available. I will email you when information is known.

There is certainly a hole in the hearts of the Faribault Lions Club, the 5M2 PDGs, and our Multiple. PDG Bill truly SERVED. One Lion made a difference to many...non-Lions and Lions.

Subject: 5M5 PCC Bob Lieb

As I am unable to get through to the 5M Blog, I'm unsure if you are aware that PCC Bob Lieb had a stroke about a week ago, and after time in Methodist Hospital, is now in an assisted living facility.

According to PCC Vern Harjes, Bob's speech has been affected quite a bit, but nurses have said he has been one of the most cooperative patients in helping with his own rehab, not surprising knowing him! He is located at the Hillcrest Rehabilitation & Health Care Center, 15409 Wayzata Boulevard, Wayzata 55391. It's doubtful he can handle phone calls, but if you can, drop a note of encouragement to him, we know he'll appreciate it.

Dear Lions,

I was tired of seeing the spam on this message board. I have upgraded the service to allow me to ban these spam messages from a location. They all seem to be coming from a particular location so that should take care of the ones we have been getting. I know that Lion Steve Wasserman is looking at and has another method to share communications for the multiple. Make sure you check it out, and look forward to additional information on the Multiple Website.

Dear Lions,

The following message is posted at the request of PID Ben Ward.

It is with a heavy heart that I send this message. I placed a motion in front of the executive that would have given the Saskatoon Forum a potential $20,000 donation. It was defeated unanimously by the executive. Considering this as a vote of non confidence, I had no choice but to resign as Chair.

When one works or plays hard (which is the only way I know ) then one loses hard !

I wish to thank all those MD5M people that offered me support and advice. I will always appreciate your help. God Bless !

Hello QT subscribers,

You have probably noticed that we have been getting some unwelcome solicitations on this message board. Enforcing security on a QT board such as this is probably impossible. For that reason, I have created a "google group" to replace this message board. The google group allows me to control who is allowed to post messages, so we should be able to avoid the spam we have been getting on this list.

You should have gotten (or will be getting shortly) an invitation from me to join the MD5M Google Group. I'm hoping that you will do that, and that we can phase out this QT Discussion Board.

There are several advantages to the Google Group over the QT Board besides being able to control who can post messages. On the Google Group, you will be able to create "topics" for discussion, so all the messages about a given topic will be grouped together on the online board, and have the same "subject" when they come to your email. The google group also gives you the option (from the website only) to "reply to author" so you can send a private message to whoever posted the original message rather than having everything go out to everyone subscribed to the list as is the case now.

I am hoping that the new group will generate some good sharing among the Lions of MD5M.

Happy posting!
Lion Steve

Dear Lions,

The following was received this morning from DG Mary Ellen Storley, 5M7

Hi everyone,
Sorry it has taken me so long to get this out. Clay had surgery on Wednesday, they removed the kidney and the surgery went great. They feel that all the area surrounding the kidney looks perfectly healthy. He spent Wednesday and Thursday and part of today in intensive care because on Wednesday night he had a severe reaction to the morphine they gave him.
But today they moved him from intensive care and he has been up walking and is actually feeling pretty good. Because of the set back on Wednesday night I don't expect he will be coming home till probably Monday. Thanks again for all your prayers, I know they made this whole thing work. He is in Room 3027 at Unity Hospital in Fridley.
See you soon.

Dear Lions,

Good news relative to PDG Clay Storley, Spouse of DG Mary Ellen Storley, 5M7. The attached was received from Lion Debbie Roberge just a bit ago.

Please keep the "Gentle Giant" & Lion Sweetie in your prayers.

Good News!

Yes at some point in the future Clay will have to have the kidney/mass removed. The doctor will not try to remove just the mass as the kidney is one of the organs that bleeds alot and would cause more problems than it is worth. Apparently Clay had a CT scan back in 2003 and the mass showed up then only smaller, but the doctors never said anything to Clay. It has doubled in size in five years but not to the point the doctors are worried about it. In fact they said one of the options was to leave it and just watch it. Clay and Mary Ellen have said that is not an option and will have it removed in the future.

The concern is Clay's platelet level. The doctors told them your levels should be between 100,000 to 120,000. Anytime the level gets below 20,000 the concern is the patient could just start bleeding. When Clay was brought in his level was 19,000! As of yesterday morning his level was up to 42,000 and as of this morning it is up to 90,000. So far none of the tests have shown anything to explain what is going on. The ultrasounds of his legs and lungs show there are no blood clots and his lungs are clear. The echo cardiogram shows his heart is in good shape. They have not gotten the results of the bone marrow biopsy yet. So far the only explanation the doctors have come up with, is it is possible an infection or disease has gotten into the blood and now his body is fighting it and winning so his platelet level is going back up. If it is a disease there are meds he can take to deal with it. They are continuing to run tests to get to the bottom of it. Hopefully they won't need too much more blood. The first twelve hours that Clay was in the hospital they took 27 vials of blood.

Keep the thoughts and prayers coming because it sure is working!

Thanks,

Lion Debbie Roberge

Dear Lions,

This is the latest that I have heard about PDG Clay Storley.

The Docs don't seem overly concerned about the tumor on his left
kidney. It seems that it is a very slow growing variety. The big
concern is the low level of his platelets and his lack of energy. He
did start eating again yesterday and was feeling a little better.
They don't want to give him a transfusion until they find out what is
happening with his blood. One concern is that something is attacking
the platelets. Once everything is figured out they will remove the
left kidney.

Dear Lions,

The following note was sent to me by Lion Larry Kounkel.

I received a phone last nite to tell us Jerry McCauley had a heart attack yesterday morning. He was on his way home from Arizona, to being stopping at his daughters home for Easter. He had surgery, where they found 2 veins 100 % blocked. His daughter said he was resting comfortable and will be in the hospital a few days in Lincoln NE.

So a few prayers for Lion Jerry and his family. His daughter said his driving days are to a halted so we will see how this will go.

Dear Lions,

The following note was sent to me this morning from Lions Debbie Roberge.

Lion Bob ,

I need your help in getting the word out for DG Mary Ellen and PDG Clay.

DG Mary Ellen took PDG Clay to the emergency room at Unity Hospital yesterday afternoon. He was showing signs of extreme exhaustion and pain on his left side. The EKG results were fine so they took him down for a cat scan. The preliminary results are there is a mass on the left kidney. The oncologist will read the test this morning and give the official results but the family was told last night in all likelihood it is cancer. The doctors feel the prognosis is good as they believe the mass is just sitting against the kidney and has not grown into it. They will probably want to remove the mass first and worst scenario would be to remove the kidney. Mary Ellen has told the doctors that she will ask for a second opinion no matter what they come back with.

The main concern now for the doctors is to determine why Clay's platelet level is so low. There is no outward bleeding so they are running tests to find out where the blood is going. For this reason they are not giving him any transfusions yet. He has already had numerous tubes of blood drawn and will be have an echo cardiogram today to double check the condition of his heart. The oncologist, urologist, hematologist and a whole host of other doctors will be in to see Clay today and run additional test.

That is all I know for now, I will update you as I hear. Please keep both Clay and Mary Ellen in your prayers and be ready to help to cover things for Mary Ellen as her priority is Clay.

The address of the hospital is:

    Unity Hospital
    550 Osborne Road
    Fridley, MN 55432

Clay is in room 2044.

Thanks for your help!

Dear Lions,

PCC Jim Morcomb has asked me to post the following message concerning Terry Sandry, spouse of PDG Russ Sandry (5M4 1993-1994)

Good Morning Everyone,

Last Saturday (March 15th) I talked to PDG Russ Sandry. He said that Terry had been taken to emergency and then admitted immediately for surgery. The surgery included cleaning of a blocked artery in one side of her neck and heart surgery. The artery in her neck was 80 to 90% blocked and she went through 5 heart bypasses. This all happened early last week. She may have suffered a minor stroke but she does not appear to have any visible affects. She is still in intensive care but Russ expects her to be moved out of intensive care today (Monday). She will require surgery to clean the other artery in her neck at some later date. Russ says she is in good spirits and doing well but will require a lot of therapy and rehabilitation.

Their address is:

PDG Russ and Terry Sandry
Santa Anna National Wildlife Refuge
Route 2, Box 202A
Alamo, TX 78516

Russ and Terry will be working this summer, starting June 1, at a dinner theater in New Mexico. They normally come back to Minnesota in the summer but not this year.

Dick was admitted to Baptist Hospital, room 290, 1000 West Moreno Street, Pensacola, FL 32501, on Thursday. He has been seeing doctors (orthopedic surgery, internal medicine, infection control, oncology), having blood drawn, x-rays, IVs, all the good stuff. So far he's scheduled for surgery Wednesday. They started IV antibiotics last night that will continue for quite awhile. There is some discussion between the doctors about the diagnosis--the surgeon is convinced it is an infection around his knee, the infection control doctor is thinking possibly a return of the lymphoma. We won't know probably until Wednesday and they will do a biopsy at the same time they clean out the knee.

Things started falling into place yesterday afternoon, after we started making noise. We don't want a repeat of three years ago, we still feel that some of his ongoing problems are the result of neglect in the Foley Hospital. After things started getting to the pharmacy, into the records (they are still using paper charting), and the nurse could wrestle the chart from the doctor, his care improved.

I will try to keep you updated periodically. Don't know how often it will happen.

Thanks to those of you who have offered assistance. I will remember and call you if and as needed.

George is flying in Tuesday evening for a week to give me some support. His visit will be welcome.

Bev

MD5M Lions, Lioness and LEOS,

In the current issue of the Lion magazine, there is a wonderful article highlighting PDG Jack Hines and PDG Allan "Bucky" Hartkopf of District 5M5 and great job they do in the area of extension. The two page article details their approach, and ends with ten points for successful recruitment of the members for a new club. The article also includes a photo of PDGs Jack and Bucky and a photo of the Rogers LEOS.

PDG Jack and PDG Bucky, congratulations on the article!! And thank you for your dedication and efforts in creating new Lions clubs. You serve as an example to all Lions, Lioness and LEOS in MD5M.

Dear Lions,

PCC Keith Johnson asked me to post the following letter.

To: Lions of MD5M, Minnesota, Northwest Ontario, and Manitoba
From: PCC Keith Johnson District 5M-4
Concerning: The office of International Director for LCI

Dear Lions;

It is with much prayer and thought that I have come to the conclusion that I will not be running for International Director from Multiple District 5M.
I realize that with my family situation, (our oldest son’s wife with cancer with radiation and chemo coming next week for a month), my involvement with the USA/Canada Forum as Choir Director, my role as 5M Leadership chair, Regional Institute Faculty, and the many commitments I have in our community with Lions, civic activities and church, the role of International Director will not work for me.
I have discussed this at length with my partner in service Marian, and feel this is the route we need to take for the above stated reasons.
I will continue to fulfill my obligations to the multiple providing Leadership for the VDG’s, DGE’s, MERLO, speaking engagements, and whatever other situations may arise in providing quality leadership.
I want to say thanks to the many Lions who have encouraged me to run for the International Director position for MD5M, and I hope you will understand my position for not running in this campaign.
I wish the best for PDG Robert Vokes and PDG Debra Wasserman as they seek this wonderful position in Lions Clubs International. They both are qualified and will represent our multiple with dignity.
MD5M is a wonderful collage of Lions, Lioness, and Leos, and you will always know that I am proud to be a Lion, and am so thankful all the wonderful people I have met through the years and have made a profound difference in my life. God bless all of you as you go forward and serve mankind through Lions.

     Sincerely,
     PCC Keith Johnson

She is in the hosp.to get strong enough to come home. We figure she will be there until Wed. or Thur. of this coming week. Then on to caradiac rehab about three times a week.
Sally appreciates the calls and letters from all of you, and says to say, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!to the best people she and I have ever known!! I, too, say THANK YOU, You are the best!!!!!!!!!

Dear Lions,

It appears that there may have been some sort of distribution problem at Lions Clubs International, and as a result, the following letter may not have gotten to all of your Club Secretaries. Please check with your Secretary to make certain that your club has this information.

Some or all of the clubs may also be missing the Membership Cards. If so, they should call or email the English Language Department on the phone or email address in the memo.

April 2007

Dear Club Secretary,

Your international headquarters is constantly looking for new and more effective ways to serve the Lions members, clubs, districts and multiple districts. As more and more clubs are using our Web site and filing their Monthly Membership Reports online, we have revised the home page on Web site www.lionsclubs.org to allow users to quickly find the right page for association programs, activities and resources. Streamlined navigation on the left-side of each page includes reorganized resource sections.

There is a new section called “Club Resource Center”. Here you can locate items frequently accessed for club use. Information is broken out under three main headings: Club Officer Information, Club Growth, and Club Activities and Service. The Club Officer Information section is broken down into groupings for General Information, President, Secretary, Treasurer, Club Activities Committees, Reporting and Application Forms, Order Forms, Legal and Awards.

All of the information in this Club Resource Center is more information than was previously provided in the printed Club President Kit and Club Secretary Kit. We also found that not every club uses all of the materials provided in these printed kits. Therefore, to provide access to more relevant and timely club resources, we are starting to transition the printed versions of these kits to the web for the 2007-2008 year. The only printed items we will be providing this year to all Lions clubs are the C-3 Membership Cards. Preprinted Monthly Membership Reports with LCI address labels will be sent only to those clubs who are not filing their forms online. Enclosed are the specific materials pertaining to your club.

Lions clubs who wish to receive the printed kits may do so upon request. The previous Club President Kit and Club Secretary Kit are being combined and will be known as the Club Officers Kit. The Club Officers Kit will contain the following:

 1. LA-15 Club Officers Manual
 2. DA-1 Club President Excellence Award Application Form
 3. LA-414 Ethical Standards and Conduct Policy
 4. LG-21 Privacy Policy
 5. LCIF-42 MJF Application Form and REC (Recognition)
 6. COK-1 Cover Letter

Inquiries and request for the Club Officers Kit should be directed to the English Language Department at international headquarters – e-mail english_language@lionsclubs.org, fax 630-571-1693 or phone 630-571-5466 X651.

PCC Biill,

Thanks for the notice, but I will not be able to take part. HOw do I request an itemized statement of inflows and outflows for tje candidate for 2nd VP. How I wish that had been you. We had some problems, my fault as I did not completely understand your role as the CC of the previousl year. I am sorry for that, but did favor you when you ran for ID. Would that the politics had not swayed the delegates. Dawn and you would have made a real addtion and one of which we in MD5M would have been proud.

Dear MD5M Lions;

I received the following message today in regard to Lion Marilyn Lieb and her health issues. I know she would love to hear from any and all of you.

Lion Ross

Hello Lion friends,
I'm writing today to ask for your prayers. As most of you know, Mom has been battling Kidney Cancer this spring. She's got a particularily aggressive disease and we have reached the point of moving from pursuing a medical cure to ensuring emotional, spiritual, and physical care and comfort.
We will be bringing Mom home and will begin hospice care later this week. If you would like more information about how quickly this has occured, I invite you to visit mom's caring bridge website at www.caringbridge.org and click on VISIT a site, then type in marilynlieb without capitals or spaces. You'll be directed to Mom's page where you can read the journal postings by family, look at some photos, and you can read or sign the guestbook which mom reads daily.
She misses you all and loves to talk about the fun times and good works she's been a part of through her membership in Lion's Clubs International.
    God Bless,
Tracy Lieb Goodwin

Dear Lions,

I received the following mail this morning from PDG and Past Chair of the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank, Ken Steies. Please remember him, his wonderful wife Delores, and their daughter in law Julie with your cards and prayers. They are all going through some really tough times right now.

Delores does need all the support she can get. The cancer is of the aggressive type and is in many areas of the body. Please remember her in your prayers. Over the next months she will be taking treatments.

Also our daughter in law (Lioness Julie Steies) is in critical condition in Regions Hospital in St. Paul. It is a very rare disease "Stevens Johnson Syndrome" a one in a million disease. She is on a respirator, being tube fed and has skin grafting on over 80% of her body.More information about this disease is available on the internet. We are also asking for prayers for her as well, as we know prayers do work miracles.

Thanks,

We just had a call from Carol Ludtke's daughter telling us that Carol had broken her hip about ten days ago and is in a hospital in St. Paul. She had some problems with extremely low blood pressure so surgery was delayed, however, it appears to be stable now. I talked to Carol but she was kind of confused, said she is on a lot of medication for pain.
Apparently she tripped and fell up the steps in her home, but managed to crawl to the phone and call for assistance. She had just had cataract surgery the week before and was scheduled for the second one the day she had her hip surgery. Under ordinary circumstances she would have been released to a rehab center today, but they think it probably won't be until Tuesday. I think she is in a cardiac/respiratory area of the hospital. Is there a Unity or United Hospital in St. Paul? I think I remember her saying that was where she is.
At this point they aren't sure where she'll be going, so I can't pass that information on to you.
Cards can be sent to Carol at:

c/o Spencer Ludtke
1451 Juliet
St. Paul, MN 55105

I'll keep you posted if I hear anything more, but we're leaving on the 17th for Maryland, North Carolina and Alabama. I'd appreciate hearing if you get any news also. Also, if you have contact with someone else from the 85-86 year, please pass the word.

Dear Lions,
The following information was sent to me by Darwin Mathwig:

"Nancy has a tumor on her left lung. It is not cancerous.
The tumor is what they call a carcinoid and it is very rare for it to
be in the lung. She will undergo surgery at 7:45 am October 23rd at the University of Minnesota hospital. It is expected that they will remove the entire left lung because of the size and location of the tumor. She will be in the hospital 6-10 days and then it is expected that recovery at home will be 4-6 weeks. I will let you know the room number and address when we have it."

Let's be certain to keep Nancy and Darwin in our prayers. Cards can be sent to their home prior to Oct 23. I will pass on hospital address and information and news of Nancy's recovery as I receive it.

Dennis--
I am sorry your campaign fell short. You would have been a sensational 2nd VP. And eventual IP. We were and are behind you.
Take care and keep serving because the underlying tenet of Lionism has not changed.

Lions of MD 5M

I want to personally thank you all for you wonderful support during the recent campaign in Boston. We made a great run, but could not outvote the larger delegations from abroad. We all sent a huge message heard around the World and you helped in that effort.

Over 150 of you joined us in the parade. As a result many of our Lions handed out Ross pamphletts after the final session.
We in Oregon, are totally behind Ross. You have one great Lion to support.
I will never forget your outpouring of support and love.

You are great Lions and are doing things for the right reasons.

Your friend always,

Dennis Tichenor, PID

I found the following at wcco.com It is good to see that PDG Clay and VDGE Mary Ellen Storley were not injured.

Jun 16, 2006 7:04 am US/Central

Truck Crashes Into Fridley House
(WCCO) Fridley, Minn. A truck crashed into a Fridley, Minn. house early Friday morning, narrowly missing the sleeping couple inside.

The truck crashed into a house in the 400 block of Rice Creek Terrace around 2 a.m.

The cab of the truck went into the bedroom of the house.

A passenger in the truck sustained minor injuries. The driver of the truck fled after the accident and police are still searching for that person.

The couple inside the house was not injured, but is staying at a local hotel until their house can be repaired.

To the Lions of MD 5M

I want you all to know how much I appreciate your support. It has been huge in the campaign. We are on to Boston to win. Your courage and spirit gives me strength and courage to meet the final challenge.

Think of it - A CHOICE IN BOSTON ON THE 4TH OF JULY!!!!

Your Candidate, Ross T., has been instrumental in bringing in many others from outside of Oregon and MD 5M to the table. He has worked tirelessly for the campaign and for Campaign SightFirst II. I know you are so proud of Ross and Lynda. Special thanks too for the Council of Governors, both this year and last and to the incoming DG's.

I want to also thank Lion Brian Sheehan for serving on the elections committee for the campaign. He will be inside the voting area to help monitor the troops and voters. He will do a great job. Thanks Brian.

My very best wishes for all Lions, Lioness and Leos of MD 5.

Below you will find a document titled "Why Dennis" provided by PID ED Gear. This is in response to those who wanted additional information.

    THE CLEAR CHOICE
   IN BOSTON
COMMITTEE TO ELECT
Dennis R. Tichenor, PID
2nd Vice President
Lions Clubs International
2944 McKendrick St., Eugene, OR 97405 ▪ (541) 484-1434 ▪ oldarmy6@comcast.net

Why Dennis Tichenor?

Lions that will be voting in Boston for their next 2nd Vice President of Lions Clubs International need to know why we consider Dennis as the preeminent candidate. This letter is to share not just the jobs he has had, but the outstanding results produced by the teams he led.
This is why!
Since serving on the International Board, Dennis has been in constant demand by many of the International Presidents. As the Chairperson and Coordinator for the Worldwide Impact Program under Presidents Kay Fukushima and TS Lee his team influenced Membership Growth unmatched for many years. The first year focused on Extension and Lions started 1958 clubs. The previous norm was 1100 clubs in a year. Charter members grew from a norm of 24,000 to 48,000 in one year. The next year the focus was on increasing the number of female Lions. In an average year 6500 women joined Lions Clubs. President Lee set a goal of 16,500 new female Lions. The Team, led by Dennis, experienced a gain of more than 60,000. During those two years worldwide membership went from a net loss of 19,000 to a net gain of 10,000.
This is why!
As Chairperson of three International District Governor Elect’s schools and Vice Chairperson for three other DGE Schools, Dennis rewrote the curriculum to be more relevant. Many DGE’s attending the courses commented about the positive improvements of the school over what they had expected from hearing comments made by their predecessors. His selection as the only Lion to Chair three schools attests to the recognition of his positive influence on our Association through outstanding DGE Schools.
This is why!
There are many other examples of his successful International leadership. He chaired the first North American Membership Summit and the International Board adopted 14 of the 16 recommendations made by that group. He was a member of the first Lions Leadership Institute and helped develop the program and curriculum. He has taught in many since then. He was designated a Top Ten Youth Exchange Chairperson, and developed the first ever exchange between New Zealand and the USA. He helped put in 12 new clubs in 11 months. While serving as Eye Bank Chairperson he helped write a new law that doubled the available eye tissue in one year. He has also run a very successful corporation since 1988.
This is why!
Dennis’ leadership was recognized when he received 100% yes votes, during his endorsement process for International 2nd Vice President, in each District and the Multiple District. On each occasion the delegates had the opportunity to vote no.
Need we say more?
Make your vote – your vote – count!
Vote for Dennis Tichenor in Boston

I believe that the first one with the snowman was 1986. That one was the 5M Governors Award. The following year 1987 was also a 5M Governors Award. 1988 was the first Convention pin and that was for Denver. The snowman has been on every convention pin since then.

Conversation was short due to the fact that they have no power (and a bunch of trees down) at their home, so the cell phone was getting weak. Both Ole & Karen seem to be in good spirits.

Lion Cliff,
For one new Member you would get a Bronze Certificate, for Two new Members you would get a Silver Certificate, for Three new Members you would get a Pin, and for Four or more new Members you would get a Gold Certificate Plus the Pin. I hope that this clears your situation up some. Yours In Lionism, 5M6 PDG Ed Nelson QT - Lion Cliff Welte <qtopic+13-TFJTqswnLDd@quicktopic.com> wrote:

Could someone please help me clear up my confusion on distinctive pin for club presidents? Does this Club Diamond Award mean that when I bring in 2 new members my club president receives a pin to wear with a diamond in it? What do I get to wear for bringing in 2 new members? My Governor told me that I get a certificate to place on my wall. What is my incentive to bring in new members, when someone else gets the award? I for one will not try very hard to bring in new members if the president is wearing my award? Thank you Lion Cliff Welte

The USA/Canada Lions Forum is in Peoria this year and there is a bus going down there. We will be leaving on the 22nd of September and Returning the 25th. If you haven’t been to the forum it is an absolute great time. They have excellent seminars, great speakers and superb fellowship. The bus ride will be between $75 and $100/person dependant on how many sign up. So far we have 30 people signed up and have room for 25 more. Please contact me if you don’t want to miss out on this great opportunity.

Here is a copy of a letter I received, and I assume was emailed to many others, from LCIF Chairman Kusiak:

Dear Lion Ross,

The devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida is deeply troubling. Our hearts go out to those who are suffering and face an uncertain future. We are acutely aware of the struggle for clean water, food and shelter, to say nothing of the need to be able to return to work and school.

LCIF will do all it can to help victims recover their lives. LCIF has awarded a US$200,000 Major Catastrophe Grant to help victims. I also have approved emergency grants for districts affected by the hurricane. Three US$10,000 emergency grants have been awarded for Districts 8-O, 8-S 8-I in Louisiana. I expect many emergency grants to be approved very soon when district governors are able to contact us.

LCIF has set up a designated fund for Lions and others who wish to help the hurricane victims. Checks can be mailed to LCIF at 300 W. 22nd St., Oak Brook, IL 60523, USA. Make the check payable to LCIF and indicate on the memo line that the donation is for Hurricane Katrina.

All donations for Hurricane Katrina count toward a club’s and district’s giving totals. (Donations from U.S. residents also are tax deductible.) However, these donations are not eligible for Melvin Jones Fellowship recognition.

As with other large-scale disasters, I am sure Lions are eager to assist victims in various ways besides donating funds. To help facilitate the expected volunteer efforts of Lions, with the approval of the executive officers, I have appointed a steering committee of four leading Lions from the four states most affected by the tragedy to serve as liaisons between LCIF, Lions in the disaster areas and Lions who want to help.

These four Lions are:

International Director Robert Eichhorn, 4301 St. Francis Street, Metairie, Louisiana, 70001, 337-237-7169 (temporary phone number), 504-525-7235 (business), 504-455-6951 (home), 504-525-7238, (fax), execdirector@llef.gs.net
International Director Howard Jenkins, 850 Mt. Vernon Road, Columbus, Mississippi, 39702, 662-328-2756 (home number and fax).
Past International Director Lowell Bonds, 1808 Hummingbird Lane, Hoover, Alabama, 35226, 205-322-6575 (business), 205-823-4941 (home), 205-328-3612 (fax), ljbonds@aol.com
Past International Director E. Robert Lastinger, 29743 Morwen Place, Wesley Chapel, Florida, 33543, 813-994-9604 (residence), 813-994-0844 (fax), edbobl@earthlink.net.

I have asked Past International Director Bonds to oversee the steering committee for the purpose of coordinating short-term and long-term assistance for the hurricane victims.

Please keep in mind that they may difficult to reach, at least initially, because of disruption in services in the disaster areas as well as their heavy workload. Please keep trying to reach them.

We are aware that in past disasters of this magnitude goods often are collected and shipped to a disaster area that are not needed and ultimately are not used. So please refrain from collecting items until more about immediate needs is known.

You should also know that International President Ashok Mehta has issued a statement on the hurricane on the Lions’ Web site. Please take a minute to read his words of consolation and encouragement.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those in the affected areas. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Yours in Service,

Clement F. Kusiak, 2005-2006 LCIF Chairperson

I have received several inquiries in regard to the Hurricane Katrina Disaster in Louisiana, MIssissippi and Alabama. The is a message from LCIF Chairman Kusiak on the LCI(LCIF) Web site today. LCIF Chairman Kusiak has established a sterring committee made up of four International and Past International Directors from the affected states. The Chairman is asking that donations be sent to LCIF, made payable to LCIF and marked for Hurricane Katrina Disaster. The funds will then be distributed under the guidance of the steering committee and as always will go to Lions CLubs in the affected area and be managed by those Lions. Donations will not be eleigible for a MElvin Jones Fellowship, however all donations count toward your club and district giving totals.

Please see the LCI web asite for additional information and to read the letter from LCIF Chairman Kusiak you may go there by clicking on the link below or by cutting and pasting the link into your web browser:

http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/content/lions_lcif_katrina.shtml

Again, be assured the LCIF has already responded to the disaster, and will do more as your club and individual donations pour in to the special Katrina Hurricane DIsaster Fund.

Hello Lions:

This is Lisa Roden (Floyd and Bev's daughter). My other two sisters wrote this e-mial today and I thought you may want a copy of it...

As most of you have already heard, Bev was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure last Thursday.&#A0; On Monday at an appt with a Cardiologist she found out things were worse than expected and was then admitted to Abbott Northwestern's Heart Hospital.
&#A0;
After two days of waiting many tests including EKG, ECG, Cardiac MRI, Blood work etc. we have found out that the original assumption that she had a heart attack was not true.&#A0; She did not ever have a heart attack.&#A0; The MRI proved no heart attack and that her heart muscles are very weak.&#A0; She has 22% of her heart functioning today.
&#A0;
Dr. Pritzker diagnosed her with Idiopathic Cardiomyopathy.&#A0; Idiopathic meaning unknown cause for her heart failure.&#A0; It is when your heart becomes weak and loses its basic ability to pump forcefully.&#A0; It may have been a virus, but the doctor said that can not be proven.&#A0; So we are left with that she has an extremely failing heart with no reason.
&#A0;
She is going to have an angiogram tomorrow to make sure that there is no blockages.&#A0; If so they will either do angioplasti or other surgery as needed while they are in there.&#A0; The doctor said there is a 2 out of 10 chance that there will be a block.&#A0; Again making it unlikely that a blockage caused her heart failure.
&#A0;
We do not know what time this will be done, it will be tomorrow is all we know.&#A0; If they do find a block then do a procedure to open it she will also get a Biventricular Pacemaker (Medtronic).&#A0; If no procedure needs to be done then she will have to wait 9 months and then will get it due to some laws of our lovely state.&#A0;
&#A0;
After tomorrow she will properly medicate and go to a cardiac rehab program.&#A0; She has met a dietician and will get to learn all kinds of things about her new way of life as the next few days pass.
&#A0;
Please pass this information on to all those who would like to know, as it is very hard for our family to be here and phone everyone.&#A0; As you can imagine this is a shock to all of us and has been emotionally draining to all of us.&#A0; &#A0;
Please keep Mom in your prayers as she is always praying for all of us! &#A0;
We love her and hope she will be home soon and able to live a productive life!
&#A0;

I have just been informed by DG Pat Kennedy that 5M7 Bev Roden (spouse of PDG Floyd) has been admitted into Abbot Northwest hospital for congenital hear falure. It appears that this was from a situation that happend in July. Bev went to the doctor last week not feeling good and they admitted her into Abbott. Once we find a room number or more information we will pass it along.

The Policy Manual of the Council of Governors is what I was referring to. I'm just not certain who has the most recent copy on his/her computer (perhaps Exec Sec Bob Harms or PDG Wayne Swanson)?

Sounds like your reference manual is very useful!

Subject: Re: Multiple District 5M Discussion Board - Policy Manual
CC Brian & Robert: I see that you're looking at a possible Policy Manual (for the Multiple?).

During my year as DG ('98-'99), I put together an extensive Policy Manual, later renamed "Reference Manual". These 50 pages included as much as I could think of to assist clubs with their programs. One was given to every Club President and Secretary in 5M5 and position descriptions to every
Cabinet member so they would know what was expected of them - since that time it
has been pretty well forgotten. I'm including the Table of Contents and Cabinet Position Description reference page below so you may see what it
includes. There's no use reinventing the wheel and if any of this 50-page manual would be helpful, don't hesitate to let me know as I have it on a 3-1/2
inch floppy, as well as paper copy. It needs updating, and I'm sure it can be
improved.. Good luck with your efforts. PDG Jack McKernan e-mail: _jbmckernan@aol.com_ (mailto:jbmckernan@aol.com)

They just built a new church, so I don't know what the address is, but if you are coming north on Hwy #10 get off at the Golden Spike road. At the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank Board meeting and Training I learned that VDG Doris Fertig was diagnosed with breast cancer and had surgery on the 8th of June. She has given me permission to let you all know. I am sure that you will want to write her, or call with your best wishes for a continued speedy recovery.

Dear Lions,

I received the following note from DGE Marlys.

Gov. Tiny just called and said he is feeling just great. He thought he felt
great before surgery but feels even greater now. Surgery went very well and
he is so pleased with the doctors and the care he is getting.

Gov. Tiny could come home today but he will be going to the Albert Lea
Hospital for rehab but can't go there until Monday. He decided to just stay
in Rochester until Monday. He's planning to be at the Council of Governors
meeting March 12th and hopefully the Twinning Banquet the night before.

Many prayers answered but keep them up for a good recovery.

Dear Lions,

I received this note from CC Keith Johnson.

Dear Lion Friends; Just got a call from Florence Brandt, DG 5M-2 Tiny's wife, and she said Tiny had a successful heart valve operation today at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester. He went in for surgery at 1:00 pm today and came out of surgery at 6:30 pm tonight. They tried to repair his own heart valve, but could not and they replaced it with an artificial valve. Florence said he is intensive care and has tubes coming and going all over the place. He is resting now and she will be back again tomorrow and will call me with any further information. Marian and myself feel we should not call, or visit the hospital for a few days, but send cards and well wishes, and prayers to cheer both of them. They both need privacy and rest. If you want to call in the next few days, call Florence at home in the evenings. Executive Secretary Bob Harms will be sending flowers on behalf of the Multiple and the Council of Governors. Here is Tiny's hospital address: DG Tiny Brandt, St. Mary's Hospital, Mayo Clinic, 1216 2nd St. S.W. Rochester, Mn, 55902.

Subject: Update on PDG Al Roberge

It has been awhile since my last update. Everytime I was going to email you things would change. The family has been on an emotional and physical rollercoaster ride that I would not wish on anyone.

Right before Christmas the doctors and therapist felt that Dad had reached a plateau. Because of this the insurance companies started to dictate what treatment Dad could receive. Between social workers, hospital staff and nursing home employees our lives were completely turn upside down and inside out. On January 17th Dad was taken from Bethesda Rehab Hospital to Mercy for a consultation with the neurosurgeon and then to Benedictine Health Care in downtown Mpls. On Saturday January 22nd Dad was taken to the emergency room at Abbott-Northwestern because he had a high fever, low blood pressure and an infection of some kind. It turned out to be an urinary infection. He also came down with pneumonia while there. This all happened just days before I was to leave on a VOSH Mission to Venezuela. Dad insisted that I go so I went only to find out when I came back that he had filed a patient's rights complaint against the nursing home. Because of this complaint we feel he was blacklisted and the nursing home in St. Paul would not accept him now (whereas they would before).

Thanks to some very caring neighbors and caring Lions and alot of prayers we managed to get Dad accepted at the VA Medical Center in St. Cloud. Dad was transferred today and his new address is:

                            Albert L. Roberge
                            VA Medical Center
                            Building 50 - 2nd Floor Vent Unit Room 239
                            4801 Veterans Drive North
                            St. Cloud, MN 56303

It will be a big adjustment for Mom as she knows she will not be able to see Dad everyday now. The neighbor down the street said she would take Mom once a week to see Dad and maybe once in awhile one of our Lions can take Mom for a few hours and then of course I will take her up on Saturdays and Sundays.

If you are ever in St. Cloud, don't hesitate to stop in and see Dad. I know he would be thrilled to see all of you.

Thanks for everything,

Debbie Roberge

Fellow Lions,

I’m deeply saddened tonight to tell you of the passing of District Governor Wesley Sideen. Lion Joe Fox was talking to him and the phone went dead, Carol Ann picked up the phone and had to call 911. Lion Joe went to Regions Hospital and was with Carol Ann. Lion Joe mentioned that DG Wes had passed away before the paramedics had arrived. I do not know the cause of death but suspect it may have been a massive heart attack. Please keep Carol Ann and the Sideen family in your prayers. I will get the word out about the arrangements when they become available. Lion DG Wes is going to be greatly missed by me as well as all who grew to know and like him. I would ask that you please pass the word onto the Clubs in your area.

Dear Lions, I received this message from CC Keith Johnson this evening.

Tonight I received word from VDG Lynn Farley that 5M-6 District Governor Wes Sideen passed away tonight Monday January 24, 2005 due to what he thought was an apparent heart attack. VDG Lynn said he would be letting me know about wake and funeral arrangements and I will pass them on to you. Wes Sideen's address and telephone #'s are in the 2004-2005 Multiple Directory. I will work on deciding what we can do as groups to give a memorial for the wake and funeral service for Wes. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I think a nice floral arrangement from individuals, the Multiple, the DG's and the VDG's would be appropriate, or a gift of money to one of Wes's Lions special charities . As I was writing this email, PDG Joe Fox, Wes's secretary, called me and Wes did suffer a heart attack. He was talking to Wes on the phone when suddenly the phone wasn't working and Carol Ann came on the phone and said she needed to call 911 because Wes was down on the floor. Joe met Carol Ann at Regents Hospital and was with her when he called. Wes was a great warrior for Lions and he will truly be missed. I enjoyed his wit, his love of life, and his commitment to the District Governorship for which he was elected and entrusted. I am glad he was able to be at his special mid-winter convention, which was a big event in his life. Our thoughts now turn for support to Carol Ann. God's peace be with her and God's grace for the wonderful life of a great teacher and a mighty Lion, Wes Sideen. In sorrow, Keith

P.S. If you attend the wake or the funeral, I feel that Blues would be in order and I would hope we all could sit together for the funeral for those that will attend.

The La Crescent Lions Club sadly announces the death of one of our members, Edward (Ed) Boske on Jan 21, Friday, after a battle of pancreatic cancer. He fought hard and was an active member up to the end, even placing himself on our Club's Board this past year.

He is a past District Governor for 5M1 and was very, very proud of that distinction. Anywhere he would be involved with our activities and the activities of District, he proudly wore his governor's jacket, vest, hat, pins and polo shirts that showed his loyalty to our organization. On record, he joined Lions Sept 1970 (24 1/2 years).

His wife Gwen and family are making funeral arrangements for more than likely Tues 1/25 Visitation and Wed 1/26 Services. Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home is making the arrangements. The La Crescent location of the funeral home is 412 So. 3rd St, 507-895-2518. Arrangements may be at his church but not known now.

The local flower shop is called Apple Tree Flowers 507-895-6000.
I have attached some photos of him in the last couple of years. Please pass on the message to those who need to know.
Thank you.

To All:

Some of you may have already been told -

Gene Wagar (5M11 Cabinet Treasurer) passed away this morning. He was doing well enough to be transferred to Bethesda Hospital this afternoon, but had a blood clot and passed away. I am unclear if it was an infection from the clot or if the clot resulted in a further stroke or heart
attack.

Funeral arrangements are pending. They will likely be at Dilworth Lutheran Church late in the week.

Gene will be missed. May he rest in peace.

Probably some of you have heard by now that PDG Dick Norlin has been hospitalized since December 7, first with a pinched nerve due to a cyst, followed by two infections, and atrial fibrillation which was intensified by the infections. He is now back in a regular room after over two weeks in intensive care and progressive care. Lots of rehab ahead, I'm afraid. He is in the South Baldwin Regional Medical Center, 1613 North McKenzie Street, Foley, AL 36535. What a way to spend a winter down south!

Dear Lions,

The following was received today from Dr. Tae-Sup Lee

Lion Bob

Dear Fellow Lions,

It was with great shock, disbelief and immense sadness that the people of the world have witnessed the horrific earthquake and tsunami disaster that has impacted millions across South Asia. Lions around the world have been contacting me to learn of LCIF’s relief aid provided thus far, and also how they can support Lions in the region respond to this great tragedy.

I am pleased to report that nearly US$200,000 in emergency grant funding has been disbursed and a special designated fund established for Lions and others who want to help out. Attached is a first bulletin with an update of details of LCIF’s relief efforts for this catastrophe.

On behalf of Lions of South Asia, I sincerely thank you for your interest, concern and compassion.

Sincerely,

Dr. Tae-Sup Lee

LCIF Chairperson

LCIF Tsunami Relief Update

Bulletin 1 – December 29, 2004

In the last 72 hours, $170,000 in LCIF Emergency Grant funds have been dispatched to Lions districts in India, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Indonesia to help the Lions provide food, blankets, water and other relief items.

There are 73,000 Lions in the hardest hit regions of India, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Indonesia on the spot, coming to the aid of those in need. They are working in the affected communities, as well as coordinating with the government at national levels. In Sri Lanka, the Lions have formed a joint commission with the government to expand the country’s response in dealing with the critical issues of shelter, water supplies and sanitation. In India, the hardest hit districts in and around Chennai have also come together to coordinate the expenditure of US$50,000 in LCIF funding awarded for districts that cover the coastline from Tamil Nadu north to Orissa.

For Lions wishing to help support these efforts, LCIF has created a special designated fund, the “South Asia Tsunami Disaster 2004 Fund,” to receive donations that will be forwarded on to the affected areas. This fund will complement funds already awarded. Funds will be used to support both immediate and long-term needs of the victims. Already Lions around the world are making pledges of support, including US$120,000 from the Lions of Sweden and US$200,000 from the Lions of Korea.

Lions and others interested in supporting this special fund can do so by making a donation to LCIF. In North America, checks can be sent to LCIF. In other countries, funds can be sent directly to the LCI or LCIF accounts. In both cases, a cover note or memo on the check/deposit slip should indicate that the donation is for the “South Asia Tsunami Disaster 2004 Fund.” You may also contact your district’s LCIF chairperson for more details on making donations to LCIF. If you have any questions, please contact lcif@lionsclubs.org.

LCIF will continue to keep you updated through these bulletins. More funds will be awarded by LICF in the coming days as needs are assessed. Your support is needed to help Lions of the world respond to what is the world’s largest catastrophe in modern history

For those with questions and concerns in regard to the recent tragedy in the Indian Ocean area, I'm sure that LCIF will respond. You can be certain that LCIF will respond immediately with emergency grants to the Lions Clubs Districts in the area. In addition, as was done with the earthquale in Turkey, I'm sure that there will be a special fund set up to allow contributions for this emergency. I would watch the LCIF portion of the LionsClubs.org for information and further developments. You will not be likely to see anything until after the holidays when everyone returns to work on January 3rd. I would not try to make contributions to the local clubs, as they too are very often affected by the disaster and unable to handle donations made directly to them. Contributions through LCIF will be assured of getting to Lions in the area that are able to help and your funds are subject to the usual rules of accounting and accountability.

Dear Lions,

I received the following message from PDG's Elvera and Orville Trettin.

Hi,
Just wanted to let you know that PDG Lion Dick Wessling (5M11 '91/'92) has been in the hospital. He hadn't been feeling well for a couple of weeks and thought he had the flu or something. He went to the doctor and they did some tests and sent him home with Celebrex, thinking it was just a virus. He didn't get better and went back the next week. His doctor couldn't figure out what was wrong, so did a chest X-ray. He saw something on it and they did a stat Ct scan and admitted him to the hospital. This was Tuesday afternoon. The cardio-thoracic surgeon talked to us Wednesday afternoon and he had a descending thoracic aneurysm repair Thursday morning. Your aorta is usually about 3 cm in width and his was 9 cm. He was in surgery for a little over 6 hours. He spent a little over 7 days in surgical intensive care. Then they moved him to the cardiac floor. He was only there a couple of days. I got a phone call Sunday morning that he wasn't doing very well and I needed to be at the hospital. They sent him back to medical intensive care. After another 3+ days there, they sent him back out to a regular room this past Wednesday. He is doing much better. The doctor thinks he will be in the hospital about another week or so. Hopefully he continues to get better and doesn't have any more set backs. Keep him in your prayers. I didn't have everyone's e-mail address, but sent this to those I have. Barb

Update on PDG Al Roberge from daughter Debbie

In the last two weeks, Dad has had a lot of progress. He is able to
move his right leg in a kicking motion and pull it up using his groin
and thigh muscles. He is able to move the right shoulder and arm and the
right hand quite a bit. The left side has some motion but not as much as
the right all though the therapists are hopefully. They have been
weaning him off the respirator for two four hour sessions a day. Most
days this goes pretty well. Once this schedule is going good all the
time they will be extending it to try and get him to a schedule of off
the respirator all day and just on it at night. If they get it to that
point then the next step will be to get him off of it all together.

Mom talked to the doctor yesterday and she is very happy with Dad
progress. They want to keep him for at least 4 more weeks to take
advantage of the therapy.

Take care and have a blessed holiday season.

Debbie

Fellow Lions,
Being that my District 5M-11 is now a truly international district, a fellow member has suggested twinning within our own district. I believe this is an excellent idea and am working on my club in Winnipeg to twin with a club in our Minnesota part. We would not need to go through LCI to do this and I believe it would bring a better understanding amongst ourselves and our programs that we have in common. My question is: Do Multiple Districts twin with other multiple districts within the US and Canada?

Good News on PDG Al Roberge from daughter Debbie

Just wanted to pass on the good news we received on Saturday afternoon from the physical therapists. Dad does not have the same type of injury that Christopher Reeve had. He has what they call a central spinal cord injury. Due to the nature of the injury the spinal is in shock for a minimum of 4-6 weeks. During this time they do not expect any movement.

Based on what they saw on Saturday, Dad is ahead of schedule. The accident was 4 weeks ago last night (seems hard to believe). There is muscle movement in all of the joints (toes, foot, calf and thigh) in the right leg. There is some muscle movement in the right hand and arm. The muscle movement in the left leg is there but not as strong as in the right leg. As for the left arm and hand there wasn't any movement but the therapist said there were muscle tremors. The therapists feel Dad's spine is coming out of shock so they will be working him hard to bring him back as far as they can. At this point, they cannot predict how far that will be but they goal is to bring him back as far as they can.

I think you can understand why Saturday afternoon was alittle emotional for us. Dad's spirits remain high. Thursday night I taped up all the cards he has received on the walls. He was alittle taken back but really appreciates all the support and prayers. Last count there were just over 100 cards. Even the nurses were impressed.

The respiratory tech is trying to wean Dad off the respirator alittle every day. The goal will be to get him completely off of it. If they can, it will open up the possibilities for Dad and where he could go after leaving Bethesda.

I can't express in words my gratitude to all of you for what you mean to our family. For all the thoughts, support, prayers, visits, emails, phone calls and cards. Thanks for being you.

PDG Al Roberge update from daughter Lion Debbie.

Hi All!

Yesterday morning we transferred Dad over to Bethesda Rehabilitation Hospital. The transfer went well. One of the first things Dad asked when he got over there was what therapy he was going to have that day. The nurses told him the therapy would not start until today since they needed to get him in the system and evaluate him. Today he was supposed to start with speech, occupational and physical therapy.

His new address is:

        Al Roberge
        c/o Bethesda Rehabilitation Hospital
        5 West Room 580
        559 Capitol Blvd
        St. Paul, MN 55103

I don't know the phone # to the phone in his room yet.

He can have visitors if you wish to stop on by. The hospital is two blocks north of the State Capitol. If you take University Ave which runs right behind the Capitol and go north on Capitol Blvd for two blocks you will run into the hospital. The parking lot is on the left before you get there.

In talking to the doctor last night, she seems to feel there might be some hope for Dad to get back some mobility but it is too early to tell. We can only hope and pray.

Words cannot express the gratitude I have for all of you. You are a very special group of people and I know our family would have never made it through all this without you.

Here is kind of a summary of what when on last week for Dad. On Monday (09/27) they inserted the feeding tube in his stomach. On Tuesday (09/28) they put the trach in. They determined that it leaked too much so on Friday morning (10/01) they repaired it. Since then the respirator does not come off near as much. Sunday (10/03) they starting rotating splints on his feet/legs and hands every two hours so the limbs do not stiffen. The nurses have also put special gloves on his hands to help with the swelling.

Saturday Dad started to mouth words to communicate. The nurses brought in an alphabet/number board so Dad can mouth out the letters to words to communicate with the nurses better.

Dad moves his toes alot but they tell us that it is just nerve reactions. Yesterday though I noticed that his knees and thighs were moving. It was probably nerve reaction too but we are not giving up hope. Sometime this week we think that Dad will be transferred from Unity Hospital - ICU to Bethesda (in St. Paul behind the Capital) for two weeks of rehab. After that he will be transferred to a place that we pick off a list of places. We have not seen the list yet so we can only hope that we will be able to bring him back to a place closer to home. When I learn more I will let you know.

Last night was alittle hard as Mom broke down crying outside of Dad's room. She was not able to reach Dad to hug or kiss him and I can tell it is tearing her up. On the 29th of this month they will be celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary and I can count on one hand the number of time they have been apart.

Thank you all once again for all the support and prayers. I know it has helped a great deal!

Dear Lions

Those of you that were at the Forum in Reno will remember that the Lions of the US and Canada, were asked to save a bar of soap and a bottle of shampoo to be sent to those in need because of the terrible destruction from the recent hurricanes in Florida.

While at the Forum I spoke to Don Scott, the Executive Secretary for the Lions of Florida, and he said that anything would be appreciated. You can send toiletry items such as soap, shampoo, tooth paste, tooth brushes or whatever you feel you can, directly to the Lions of Florida at the address below, or you can send them to the MD5M District office and I will forward them. If you plan to send them to the MD5M office, be sure that they are delivered prior to Sept. 28, as that is when I will make my shipment.

In response to Exec Sec. Bob Harms idea that we should spread the word about the 5M discussion space. All of the districts have their own websites and some clubs do, too. I would offer this suggestion. Put the link for the 5M discussion board on the District's websites and individual club sites. The more we have it out there, the more people will see it and be able to communicate with other Lions in the Multiple. I plan on putting the link on our free Lions Club website www.lionwap.org/clarissamn today.

Stay warm and keep out of the snow ( no shoveling allowed-just kidding) We had 11 inches in our neighborhood. It was no fun driving back from 5M1 (Austin, MN) Sunday because of the icy highway. Dear Fellow Lions:

The Welcome Lions Club is once again giving away $10,000 cash! We want our fellow Lions Members and Clubs to have a chance at winning the prizes. We are conducting a raffle to help raise funds for the relocation of our baseball and softball diamonds and we need your help. All proceeds from this raffle will help fund this project.

The reason for this project is to give the children in our area a safe place to play baseball and softball. The existing diamonds were built near (within 50’) a railroad track. In the past trains were rarely seen using this track, maybe 3 trains per week, traveling 10 mph at the most. The railroad now has repaired and updated the track to a high-speed rail line. Union Pacific estimates we will have 12 – 24 trains per day traveling at speeds up to 50 mph. The diamonds, which have been supported by the Welcome Lions Club along with other area organizations for many years, have become a major safety concern. The Welcome Lions Club along with other organizations in the surrounding area is in the process of building a new baseball/softball park in Welcome. With your help from previous fund-raisers we have been able to finish the excavation, grading and tiling phase of our project. We have also seeded the entire complex and will begin to put up backstops and fencing this fall.

We are offering the raffle tickets to the public. The tickets cost $25.00 each. Grand prize is $5,000 cash!! 2nd prize is $2,500, 3rd prize is $1,000, and 4th 5th and 6th prize is $500. Only 1,000 tickets will be sold. Drawing will be held on Feb. 01, 2004. Please reply by Jan. 25, 2004. Send your request for tickets to the address below. First come, first served.

Your donation could turn into a great fund raiser for your club. We welcome tickets purchases from your club or individual members.

Thanks for your help and consideration,

That's a great picture on the site of the award with CC Bob and PID Ross. Is there anyone who has a picture of the whole group that was taken after the Saturday banquet? Would love to see that on the site, too!

A number of pictures were taken at the USA/Canada Forum in Portland this year including a group picture of all attending. Is there a way we could get that picture onto the 5M website for all to look at and download?

Had a great time in Portland for the USA/Canada Forum. It was fun meeting people from all over the country and Canada. Speakers were great and seminars were infomative. This was my first forum. Congrats to our multiple 5M for having the highest percentage of attendees at this year's forum. 121 from 5M!

Sorry to hear about Jared Johnson. Thanks for the info. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't he one of the new Lions at Thunder Bay with the banner? My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

Todd, There is no Lions program for assisting those with macular degeneration. There are a number of different kinds and degrees of macular degeneration. If someone has been diagnosed by an MD as having it, would suggest that they go the the University of Minnesota's Low Vision Center. There they teach those with macular degeneration how to make the best use of the sight they still have. Call 800-937-4391 and ask to speak to Mary Ruff. Do not have your club by a "reader" (like advertised in the Lion magazine) until they have been evaluated by the above center or any other low vision center.

Lion Brian,
Another year of Lionism is upon us! We've all returned from Osaka, and are excited and ready to begin the year! What do we as a group of governors need to do to update our web page information, or should we each be updating our respective district pages and in turn the Multiple page will be updated. Suppose we'll hear more at the Council Mtg.

I'd have to agree with Deborah that the convention was very educational and we met many new friends. I believe you can go to
http://www.ccra-adrc.gc.ca/tax/nonresidents/visitors/tax-e.html and it will give you information on GST tax refund for visitors to canada. If this doesn't work for you go to google.com and search for GST tax refund. Again what a great convention!

Great convention in Thunder Bay last week end! I'm wondering if anyone has or can get me a form to request a refund of the GST tax from the hotel. We didn't have time to stop and are now wondering if we can fill out a form and mail it somewhere. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi ... I am working on a lions project and need some information. I need/want a listing of ALL District Govenors in 'The International Association of Lions Clubs.' Trying to piece a listing together by going district to district is labouriously time consuming. I need/want the listing in a MicroSoft Excel file so spreadsheet fuctions can be utilized. This information must be available somewhere! If you know, would you please let me know.

The specific information I need/want is as follows:
    District Governor's name,
the District Number they governor in,
    mailing address,
    phone number,
fax number (if they have one),
email address (if they have one),

any help would be appreciated.
respectfully
