The perfect Macintosh must: be fast enough for OS X (600mhz with altivec sounds about right), be able to run at 1280x960 (1024x768 isn't nearly enough "real estate" to work effectively in OS X), be under $1000 like any other computer, and have an upgradable processor. 3 outta 4 ain't bad.

Bravo Apple, thanks for withholding this machine from the consumer market.

Also, there's no nice flexible arm or delicate LCD screen to break. Henrico Co schools in Richmond had a pilot iBook program. They found that adolescents were a little rough on the LCD panels and the other more delicate parts of their laptops.

There are no handles to make it harder to run off with, undoubtedly. Good idea for a school. ;)

There was a good post on Slashdot noting a peculiar change in Apple design -- where are the handles on this badboy? Even the Mac Classic had a handle of a sort, and so did the original iMac and the G3/G4 towers. Presumably part of the reason you get an all-in-one machine is that it's easy to move from one location to another. So why delete the handle from the eMac? Why not add two if the thing is extra heavy? You can't tell me Ives and Co. couldn't figure out a creative, elegant way to do it. So, any other theories?

How long until eMac meets eBay? And why the restricted market (much discussion about this on slashdot)?

No, I got an iMac classic. It was a good deal - 700Mhz, 512 Mb ram, and a 60 gig hard drive for $1100. I really like it, but now I'm jonesing for the eMac.

Yeah, but at least you got a flat screen.

I wonder if there's going to be a gray market on these things. You might have to start hanging out in Teacher Bars, Mark!
