I've had Vanilla Coke. Not bad, actually. Just a slightly mellower flavor.

So, vanilla Coke is really good, and a bit of a southern tradition. You can get them at your local Waffle House, along with cherry Coke. Not Cherry Coke, mind you, but Coke with cherry syrup in it.

Cherry coke, vanilla coke and coffee coke; all of these were available at the malt shop in my 1950's youth. O' Arnold's where is thy sting? For that matter where is thy fries with gravy?

April Fools or no, there's already a Vanilla Coke on the market: its call Dr Pepper. See if I'm not right, the next time you pop a Pepper. The main (though subtle) flavor there is vanilla, I'm pretty sure.

Dr Pepper is absolutely not a vanilla Coke, for goodness sake, man! :)

Anyway, Vanilla Coke is a very real drink. I'd be surprised if this was a gag - and pleased if it came out, as Vanilla Coke is a delicious beverage. You just can't beat a delicious beverage.

Vanilla Coke would be great with whiskey, and I hate whiskey.

No, Dr. Bip (an obscure brand available in WV and the Pittsburgh suburbs) has prune juice.

Dr. Pepper has apricot juice. Or it did, until they switched over to artificial flavors after the Dr. Pepper Extreme fiasco in '87.

Dr. Pepper extreme? Never even heard of that one! Was that like Cool Colt, the mentholated malt-liquor?

How 'bout that drink mentioned on "The Simpsons"?

"Now you can have the taste of Worcestershire sauce in a soft drink! Ahhh....Steaky!"

When I was a kid in the early sixties we would walk to the pharmacy, sit at the
counter, and for an extra two cents we could get a vanilla syrup squirted into the
nickel coke. Man was that great. We would get a straw and suck up the syrup
from the bottom before drinking the coke. Not very healthy but tasty.

Apparently I'm not the only person in the world who thinks Dr Pepper has the flavoring of vanilla in it. & I maintain that for this reason, Vanilla Coke will be a flop.

the cherry coke mentioned earlier, in fact almost all "cherry" beverages flavored with a syrup are actually pomegranate flavored. the "cherry" flavoring used most commonly in beverages, alcoholic and non, is grenadine syrup (grenade is french for pomegranate). yay pomegrantes .

I'm more partial to RC Cola myself...

but speaking of new Coke flavors, I read in the NY Times that Coke wants to make Coke MILK!

mmmmmmmmm.....sugary calcium

I actually think vanilla and coke is a good mix. It's not like mint and chocolate, which I feel is the devil's work.

It would be interesting to see how much Coke with vanilla places like Sonic (http://www.sonicdrivein.com) sell. My partner always gets vanilla added in to his Coke when we eat there. Kroger supermarkets used to sell cans of vanilla cola in their store brand and I often bought that (I wonder if they still sell it).

I do love Dr. Pepper... As for Dr. Pepper being vanilla coke, I can see someone making the comparison - it is also kinda like a cream soda, another favorite of mine.

Check this mp3 file out - a swingin' '60s commercial for SIX varieties of flavored colas from Shasta. Love it.

Of course Coca-Cola already contains vanilla. "Cola" flavor being a combination of citrus (oil and/or juice), spice (cinnamon and/or nutmeg and/or coriander mostly) and vanilla. Most colas use various combinations of these, vanilla seems to be most frequently left out as it is in the 1923 Pepsi recipe or Amanda Foubister's GPL OpenCola recipe.

Finally, the folks down in Atlanta (World of Coca-Cola) have decided to do what drug-store fountains in the South have been doing for years. The vanilla syrup makes the coke much more mellow and takes the acidic bite out the the effervescence. I can't wait until the release. I almost never consume soft-drinks but I just can't resist a Vanilla Coke whenever I see an opportunity to order one. I think Vanilla Coke will dominate the Coke off-shoots (Cherry/Lemon) much like Krispy-Kreme (another Southern invention) has taken a strong-hold in the doughnut market. Chalk one up for the South!

As an employee of CCE I can assure you that the "Vanilla Coke" (copyright) will be on the market very soon and will be a Major Success. With the wide range of products such as Minute Made, Disani water, Mr. Pib, Sprite and Cherry Coke, Vanilla will be a great addition. With all of the buzz going around how can in not be a complete success? It will be nothing like Dr. Pepper or Cream Sodas. Just wait and see!! Its comming!!

OK CCE man...there are some guys in security that want to talk to you! Seriously, my Coke (CCE) sales rep brought in some of the new Vanilla Coke and it tastes very good. I took a bottle home to my teenager and she was crazy for more...I had to ask my rep for another couple of samples. The taste is hard to describe and doesnt overpower you...sort of a smooth, subtle taste that makes you want more. From all I've seen Coke looks like they've got a big winner on their hands. Last year Pepsi's Code Red started off good, but it just cannibalized Mountain Dew business. Coke's marketing people have done a good job to creates something really new...look for it in stores...Kroger stores that is!

Alright, for credentials, I've been a merchandiser for CCE (Coca Cola Enterprises...the company that distributes coke in much of the United States). We had our sales rally today for the summer of Vanilla Coke. Here's the scoop:

Take the flavor of Coca Cola, take away that little bit-of-a-bite it has, and mix in the flavor of creme soda, and you have exactly what it tastes like. Some people liked it at the sales rally, some didn't. I was intrigued by the flavor, but not at all blown back. I did bring home a bottle to experiment with though, and you know what? It tastes GREAT with ice cream. For anyone who likes Coke floats or Root Beer floats, you'll love the flavor with ice cream. Otherwise, it won't be such a hit.

The product is targeted to 18-24, so expect to see your typical "Keep cool, have fun with Coke" type ads on MTV and Friends and other shows that target that demographic.

One other thing: You'll be seeing a new lable on Cherry Coke as well, but it's just a label change, but they're not changing the flavor. It's just to try and unite all the different spin-offs of Coca Cola together to act as a battleship force this summer against Pepsi Co.

I loved the southerner claiming the origin of Vanilla Coke is the south. I always thought it was a New York thing. It's good to know the south likes Vanilla Coke, which we NY City kids have been enjoying for years. It's almost as good as a NY egg cream, the best drink in the world. Also, NY was the birthplace of soda. NY'ers aren't just serious about their pizza and baseball. I do hope Coke's formula for the vanilla coke is a winner.

What are you guys on about? the vanilla in the coke isn't actual vanilla. Its the fat that comes out of icecream. Its a clear substance that tastes of vanilla but really isn't
