STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES

The Surface Hydrology Research Group of the University of Connecticut has an opening for one Ph.D. position in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The primary objective of the Ph.D. project is to improve current satellite-based evapotranspiration algorithms with the ultimate goal of obtaining more accurate evaporation estimates across the globe using MODIS datasets. For this purpose, the Ph.D. project involves field experiments (deploying scintillometer and other sensors), remote sensing data (MODIS, ASTER, LANDSAT) and strong quantitative analysis. We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a strong background in evapotranspiration algorithms and image processing. Send letter of application, vita, unofficial transcripts, and contact information for three references to Dr. Mekonnen Gebremichael, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Connecticut, 261 Glenbrook Road Unit 2037, Storrs, CT 06269-20367, USA. For further questions, you may contact us at 860-486-2771 or mekonnen@engr.uconn.edu

I was looking for details on the availability of Evaporative Fraction products from MODIS and I have found in a ppt presentation the following information:

"Current project started in July 2004. Sample products for selected areas are anticipated by July 2005. Regional areas will be generated routinely by July 2006."

this power presentation (1530_ET_wood.ppt) is available at:

http://www.ntsg.umt.edu/MODISVeg.2004/

I wish the best success to this project, it would be extremelly usefull once available

I have been studyed the MOD16 algorithm for about 2 years. I have analysized and validated it in cropland (YES) in North China Plain, and I found some problems with the algorithm, especially about the parameterization of aerodynamic resistance and canopy resistance, which resulted in the estimated result far from the ground observations in the winter wheat field. Maybe, this is one of reasons why MOD16 product is now released. Now I am trying to modify it.
If someone is interesting in it. I am looking forward to discussion with you. My email, sunzhigang.sun@gmail.com

I would also like to know when mod16 will be available?
Will the evapotranspiration product be available and what
would the time resolution be of such a product?

Thank you

Hi forum, I am working for the department of geography, auburn university. I am trying to acquire MOD16 ET MODIS product. I could not find it listed on the EOS data gateway from where I get other products like NDVI, LST, SR etc. Is ET not available publicly yet? Can anybody please tell the forum about the product's status? Thanks.

Dear friends,
I am a Ph.D. student at the University of Durham, UK. The goal of my research is to extract surface albedo, VI and LST from MODIS to serve as parametric inputs for regional evapotranspiration modelling over the Volta basin (Ghana, West Africa - semiarid environment).

It will be great to share ideas with colleagues who possess advanced knowledge in this area. I am aware that Bastiaanssen and some of his students have applied SEBAL to Kenya, Sri Lanka, Turkey, etc. Can this be suitable for savannah catchments of West Africa? If not, are there other suitable algorithms?

Dear colleagues;

We published two papers regarding to the basic concept and implementation plan of MOD16:

Nishida, K., Nemani, R. R., Running, S. W., Glassy, J. M. (2003): An operational remote sensing algorithm of land surface evaporation. Journal of Geophysical Research, 108(D9), 4270, doi:10.1029/2002JD002062.

Nishida, K., Nemani, R. R., Running, S. W., Glassy, J. M. (2003): Development of an evapotranspiration index from Aqua/MODIS for monitoring surface moisture status. IEEE Transactions of Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 41(2), 493-501.

Please note that there were some mistakes in the papers:
http://ryuiki.agbi.tsukuba.ac.jp/~nishida/STUDY/errata.html

We are also getting ready to distribute the source code of MOD16 algorithm for MODIS data as well as NOAA/AVHRR.

Hello Hassan,
My name is Yann Chemin, I am doctorate student in the Asian Institute of Technology (Thailand).
I have been working with SEBAL since 1997 on many countries in Asia. Many people on this list are more knowledgeable than I on this topic, so if i may suggest you send queries over this list they may help you too. My student email is st027364@ait.ac.th.

I am also having some few interests about the two-source Energy Balance model of Norman and Kustas... If you are interested in comparing the two models.

Greetings,
Yann

My name is Wang Kaicun, a PhD student from atmospheric science department of Peking University,China. My research area is similar to Wim Timmermans’s. But my interest area is the Tibet plateau where the data is scarce and the climate is arid or semi-arid. I have read the thesis of Wim Bastiaanssen, but I think his one layer model is not suitable to retrieve ET over arid and semi-arid area. Now, I want to get information from MODIS land products, and using two-source model to retrieve ET.
I hope communicate with Wim Timmermans. My email address: wangkaicun@163.com .

My Name Kimaro, T.A
I am a final year PhD student at Kyoto University Japan. My research area is distributed hydrological modelling for detection effects of land use changes to river flows. I am applying a two source SVAT model at a small basin in Japan to estimate Evapotranspiration and Evaporation depending on landuse(vegetation and soil types) while searching for information on remote sensing products applicable for my work i came across this forum and was interested to join. I hope to benefit from the experience of members and contribute by sharing my experience as it gather it on my research.

Maybe I first introduce myself to you; I am Wim Timmermans from the International Institute for Aerospace Survey and Earth Sciences (ITC) in The Netherlands. To keep it short, basically me, and some colleagues are working on (trying to) determine ET estimates from space for quite a while. We are using a one-source algorithm (SEBAL, by Wim Bastiaanssen) and apply this on several image types over different areas, basically in data scarce regions. At the moment I am trying to get the thing running for MODIS data as well (and validate that with eddy flux measurements in Northern Botswana, Maun).

Basically I am doing some work under the SAFARI2000 umbrella in an area over Botswana (Okavango delta), where I am trying to validate the thing as well. Apart from that SEBAL one-source model I am planning to incorporate a 2-source model also, possibly coupled to an atmospheric model as well, for which there is some support from the USDA Hydrolab.
When I examined the MOD16-presentation I wondered whether already some results are obtained with MODIS and its VI-Ts algorithm and whether thereare also validation sites outside the US (since in the presentation only mention is made of the AmeriFlux sites...)

I hope someone finds some time to answer my questions and of course I'm interested in any progress and other (parallel) developments as well...

I will like to know the dates of first MOD16 products. Exciting to see what the product can do over our Canadian regions. I ran a satellite ET algorithm in 1991 over southern Saskatchewan (N. Bussičres, R.J. Granger and G.S. Strong, 1997, Canadian Journal of Remote Sensing, 23, pp. 3-14). As part of CEOP, there is a project named "SAGE" which targets the Saskatchewan river basin. I remapped some MOD10 and MOD11 from ISIN onto our Saskachewan grid. I hope to compare MOD16 to data from our boreal study site and from our models, etc.

I had a bried discussion with Joe Glassy today.

- Now he starts implementation of the EF logic for operational production (ECS).

- We need to set up validation plan for EF products and compile it to a document soon.

Report of AGU in San Francisco 2001: I presented a poster about current situation of MOD16. You can see the poster here. About 20 people came to listen to the presentation. Their responses were fairly favorable, although some people (e.g., B. Law) pointed out the VPD and soil moisture are still problematic. In order to explicitly incorporate VPD in the algorithm, we may have to consider about using MODIS atmospheric product (MODIS Precipitable Water product (MOD05_L2); MODIS Atmospheric Profiles product (MOD07_L2) ) as well as atmospheric profile product of AIRS/AMSU/HSB on board Aqua satellite.
