Welcome to the discussion area for chessfamily.org! The old discussion area (which had about thirteen messages) was mostly destroyed when our old webhost went out of business, and I took the opportunity to move over to QuickTopic, which is nicer in lots of ways. I still have the thirteen old messages around (thanks to the Google cache!), and I may put them onto the site somewhere sometime. But anyway...

I have just recently begun to do serious geneological research into my surname. My branch of the family is from Rogersville, Hawkins County, Tennessee. My father was Chester Robert Chess, son of George Smith Chess, son of John Rufus and Linneller Johnson Chess. We include Cherokee Indian heritage in our family and I found a listing of one Chess on one of the old Cherokee rolls. I am eager to communicate with all others who share the Chess name.  My name is Darren Chess. My line of the family settled in Mercer County, PA. My branch comes through Ambrose Chess. My oldest known relative is a Samuel Chess who was born around 1801 with an origination in Ireland. He had a son, John Chess who married Elizabeth Roberts and is listed as having 4 children.
 There are also people with the name McCracken in my history and they also are common to that part of Pennsylvania.
 What I would love to know is if anyone knows anything about where Samuel Chess(1801) came from. The census claims Ireland but no Chess names are found there or England. Does anyone know its roots?

My gg-grandmother was Catherine Chess, born ~1820 somewhere in Pa. She married Amzi Erwin who had a farm in Pike County, Ohio. I'm hoping Darren might have some info on possibly siblings of his early US Chess ancestors.

I am doing my chess family history--I descend from James Chess 1775 and Pricilla Roberts 1783 and am looking for more info on their parents as well and their decendents---I have much info and some very prescious copies of family history passed down to me that were written by Lewis M.
