In fact, this report is inaccurate. See Newsweek's coverage:

http://www.msnbc.com/news/691087.asp?cp1=1

The transgenic genes in this corn are not even activated.

"Since none of the genes found in the GM corn were active, the corn didn’t exhibit the traits engineered into it. Even if it did, some critics argue, the GM corn wouldn’t necessarily have a selective advantage because it was engineered to grow well in the United States, not Mexico."

This report is odd. Why don't we have any photos? It should be a very visual story, and Oaxaca isn't all that primitive or inaccessible.

When I run a Google search on it, all the stories I see appear to be derived from the same source. There are no preliminary local stories from regional news venues.

There's also no science-oriented reporting going on, which is very strange. If you're a science guy, this is a hot story; and if genetic tests were run on the corn, lots of science guys should have known about it.

I'm not saying the story is a hoax. I'm saying I don't believe it yet.

actually, i think the corn is going to cross-breed with the village inhabitants crawling into their noses and ears while they sleep and create a new human-corn hybrid creature and cause mayhem until they are captured and roasted alive at a kentucky corn-fest until they pop into popcorn and all the little kids will be happy because they taste great with butter and salt.

scary to think of what might come of this. Suicide seeds and transgenic strains are worse than human cloning, imo
