Well, how does that go? It's a woman's perrogative to change her mind, and I think I like this style of message board better than the other one. Plus, the email feature is really handy.

So where were we? What IS Otis saying on "Awesome," "Life is short.... so ??????????? rewind"??????

And here's the link again that Kim provided on the old board to her great new BBS dedicated to Sam Cooke!

http://forum.asiaco.com/sam-cooke/

In the "Street Gold" video, Ruffin talked about how much he was influenced by Sam Cooke and I think their voices really sound a lot alike. I've said it before, but what I wouldn't give to hear the Tempts' rendition of my all-time favorite Sam Cooke song, "Bring It on Home to Me." David and Paul would have sounded divine on that one!

It's about time you exercised your perrogative and changed your mind. This format is more like home. Think you can get the gang over here?

Any time Kim, it looks great over there!!!

Hey Cynthia! I converted the message board to this type of board and you can blame it ALL on Fair Lady Soul. :-) She was reminiscing about the "good old days," and how this style of messaging was better than what iMusic has going now, and I got all sentimental! Anyway, the other (threaded) style of board is better if you have a more active BBS, and since this one is kinda slow, I thought this format might be better. We'll see!

Hello Joanne and welcome!

Here's a little more info. on Glen: There's an article on this site about him, http://temptsinfo.ourfamily.com/essays/glennleonard.htm ..... and if I remember correctly, last year about this time he did a cameo appearance with the Tempts at one of their concerts. So it looks like there's no bad blood there.

Hey Kim, FLS and Cynthia!

Ivory Glenn did a cameo performance at the concert I attended in Houston last year. He still has his afro! ;-)

I bet it was your post that I remember reading that from!

Did his afro look as good as it always did? He was always workin' it! LOL! Not too small, not too big (like Melvin's was at the time,) just right! And more importantly, did you see Darcell?
kim  15

Hi everybody. I am a new member to this board and have never really posted, I just thought I would let you guys know that I really enjoy the love that you have for the Tempts. It makes my day to come home and fire up my puter just to see what's going on each day. I hope to maybe attend a concert one of these days myself. I guess I'm really just introducing myself to you guys.

Hi, Ivory I almost feel like I know you. You are the only one I've had any contact with. I more or less from the beginning era. I grew up during the Classic 5 Era, but I must say that these guys today are bad. Incidently, I love me some "Awesome". I play it to death.

I think Awesome, and a lot of people agree with me, is the closest we've had in a long time to matching the classic Tempts' harmony. It's beautiful! I think all the guys would be proud!

Hi everyone, I too am new to this board, but a huge fan of the Tempts. I had the pleasure of seeing them in concert last November, and honestly I can't wait for them to come back....Awesome is one of their better Cd's...I mean aside from the "classic" Tempts..

Ivory, I got my "Dancin" tape today and I could not believe I was watching the same Eddie Kendricks. I always thought that he and Otis were the two that could not dance. He sure proved me wrong on that one.

Just a gentle little reminder to everyone, I'm pretty liberal about what's ok to be posted here, and I really don't WANT to delete any posts. The only posts I will delete are out and out harrsment of other posters, and any post that advertises anything (books, video, carved soap likenesses of the Tempts, whatever.)

Also, just a little tip for everyone, Otis' book will be republished this fall, so save your money. ;-)

JST, re: the craziness at Paul's club, unfortunately this is cyber space, and cyber-porn abounds. Best to just ignore things like that. Where/Who is the club founder? They can delete those posts.

I really don't know who's site it is, I just like to read everybodys post. People on these sites seem to really love the Tempts. I am just glad I decided to join in. Right now I'm just posting on this site but I am a member of the Otis William fan club. I really would like to meet some of the people over there. I saw some of the pictures and you see nothing but love on the faces.

And there is NOTHING but love amongst us fans! Love for the Tempts, love for each other (sounds sappy but it's true!) I said over at Taz' Club (he's the Tempts' former body guard who just so happens to be a VERY talented writer) that I've been to shows without fellow fans and it's just not as much fun. "Fair Lady Soul" and I will be attending the Baltimore show together and I look forward MORE to seeing her than seeing the Tempts!

Anyway, JST, we're glad to have you in our little circle of friends. I post over at O's club to, give me a shout out some time!

Ivory, I envy all you guys that get to go to a Tempt Concert. I think that the closest one that is going to be to me is in Reno or Las Vegas. I'm sitting out here in a wilderness. No one ever comes to Tulsa. So I told my daughter that I was going to go whenever it is in Nevada. I hope you and Fair Lady have a good time.

Well, I usually have to go to the Tempts, they rarely come to me. The last time they were in my city was three years ago, and the closest shows they do to me are around a 3 hour drive. I'm just fortunate to have friends who live in areas where they do perform fairly often. If it weren't for that, I probably wouldn't get to see them as often as I do, because when I go, I'm primarily going to spend time with my friends. The Tempts are just a little side-trip.

I think that's the amazing thing about music. Even after someone's death, we can still hear their voice and it's like a little piece of them lives on. Closest you can get eternal life here on Earth.

Good luck with the new board Kim! Be sure to let us know of any special announcements!

Hey Ivory, On the dancing tape, when Mary Wells is talking about Sam Cooke, Is that Sam Cooke's daughter that they show in the blue dress? She sure looks a lot like him. I have been telling everybody that I won't be back for a couple of days but rest assured I will be back. I'm getting enjoyment out of this. Later.

Welcome back JST! Glad to hear you are doing better!

BlueAngel, that's an interesting question. I guess if we follow the concensus that the group broke up because David was getting too full of himself, then I'd say that the first bad thing to happen to them was that they got TOO successful. If they hadn't been as successful, maybe David wouldn't have let all of the hype go to his head. Pretty ironic, huh?

Listening to recordings from the the 60s on, one finds very few songs on which Otis Williams sang lead; and even in the songs of the 70s, there are very few lines uttered by him. I downloaded "Don't Send Me Away" from the "Emperors of Soul" set, which sounds fantastic even now. He actually had a silky singing voice at that point. Does anyone know of other songs led by Otis (perhaps on flip-sides)?

Hello Dupree and welcome! Let's see, to answer your question... one of O's other biggest hits was "I ain't got Nothin'" and he also did a song called "I See My Child" which was on the Reunion album. My favorite O lead of all time is a little ditty he and Blu wrote called "Darlin' Stand By Me." I THINK that's from the House Party album, but I KNOW it's on the EOS set. ........ Leonard Pitts wrote the liner notes for the Tempts' "Lost and Found" album and he described O's voice as "texturing the sound with a creamy baritone, weaving harmony through and through with supple subtletines..." Admittedly it's an acquired taste, but I think I O's voice is an ofter underrated, but highly integral part of the Tempts' sound. He just SHINES on "Not Now I'll Tell you Later," from "Gettin' Ready."

Crazy, no, ask away! I'm 28. You're on the younger end of the scale of fans, but you're not the youngest I've met. I have a little "sister" Jenny aka Mel-Blu aka Damon's Baby who is 14 and was 12 when she started posting and there are quite a few other fans your age. But that's the great thing about the Tempts. They attract young and old, black and white, male and female. It's a beautiful thing.

I just adore the way David begs in "Ain Too Proud To Beg"...poor thing, how could they not give him another chance?! Another one of my favorites is "I Wish It Would Rain". I'm really feeling him on that one. I'm more a fan of the original Tempts...they're so dreamy lol!!!

Tempt Girl, no, O's still alive and kickin'! He just recently had knee surgery and he may have missed a show because of that but that's news to me. Now the bass singer, Harry, has been out for a few weeks because of illness. Could that be who she's referring to?

Crazy, (Can I call you "Crazy"? LOL!) David was REALLY feeling it on "ATPTB" wasn't he? That song is AMAZING!!!! "Rain" is another good one, but my favorite "good bye" song he did was "I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You.)"

I've spent most of my day trying to find a Temptations song with "puff" in it!!! That's a hard one! Just to fill you guys in, someone posted at Imusic Temptations' bb and asked if we knew of a Temptations' song with the word "puff" in it. In the process, I came across Lyric's aka Jakki Young's lyric site and memorial. While I was there, I posted some lyrics I had saved on my computer.

I really love the London concert. I used to watch the one at Harrod's in Atlantic City and the one from London back to back. I prefer the one from London. It also has the best "My Girl" audience participation segment I've ever seen AND the Old Man River prelude they do...with Dennis and Richard? Man!!! That close harmony and then Melvin sings...just too good, too good. LOL! I prefer the Harrah's tape to the London tape for the SAME reasons you prefer it the other way around! I can't stand the audience participation part, I think they sound like race cars reving their engines on the "Ol Man River" opening and in addition, those gold lame suits are a little hard on their eyes. Oh well, to each her own. ;-)

Hi Ivory, long time no see. I was over at the movie bbs and saw your question about what scenes were left out of the edited version of the movie. Well, if memory serves me correctly there were several. The most famous one is where Paul (Christian Payton) is singing very off-key, "For Once In My Life" at Mama Rose's house where the group is celebrating their grammy win. And in no particular order: when they have their first rehearsal at Otis' house and Paul is trying to get them to "move"; the picnic scene in the park where David shows his "true" colors to Tammi Terrell; a scene where they are returning from a tour and David & Otis have a "touching" moment outside of the bus. I think that may be it, but I'm sure if it's not a fellow Temp fan will let me know. Hope that helps.

Hi Cynthia, good to see you again too. Life has a way of getting you all caught up in it, so I've been a little lax with the posting, but you know you can't stay away forever. Good to see the old crew again.

Ivory, I forgot one scene that was also eliminated; when the guys are going for their audition at Motown and after being told to come up with a new name (The Elgins just won't do.....:o) they go back outside and rack their brains before they come up with the name Temptations. I always liked that scene because it's funny and touching at the same time.

Good evening everyone.My Girl 2 I know what you mean by letting the posting get go aside.
With all that has happened since last year with my dad having two strokes.Life can get hectic.
He is doing better but he can't swallow by mouth.So he has to have a special tube inserted in the stomach where he gets liquid food and his medicines.

Ivory, I know it has been a while but I have been caught up in so many things. This is to let you know that Cox has been doing a lot of messing around and as a result, I have a new email address. My emails go to daboyd2@cox.net. I really miss hearing from anybody, but it's all good. Just saying hello to all the Temp fans.

Gosh MG2, there were a lot of scenes deleted from the movie, weren't there? I'm glad I never bought the retail verson!

Cynthia, you and your father are still in my prayers.

Hey Jonel, good to see you again too.

Yeah, Ivory, I made the mistake of buying the edited version and it was only after a very nice, and generous poster who has since become a friend made a copy of the original for me did I realize what I was missing. From what I was told, a lot of the deleted scenes involved ongoing potential lawsuits - which also explains why the movie has not been shown since it's original airing. All I know is I'm glad I have the "real" thing......lol!

MG2, I know the law suits were probably the reason why the controversial David scenes were deleted, but some of the other scenes (like when they were sitting outside trying to come up with a name) seem to have been deleted for no reason. It's enough to make me want to stage a protest around the NBC studios in Hollywood shouting "FREE THE DELETED SCENES! FREE THE DELETED SCENES!!!!" LOL!

Well now...don't you think when Otis' book is reprinted in the fall that NBC will air the movie again? I'm hoping that they will. I doubt that they will EVER show it again in its entirety. Does the DVD have ALL the scenes on it?

Do I hope that they will reair it? Yep...... Do I think they will? Nope.

I have both the NBC release and the DVD and the only thing that the DVD doesn't have that the NBC release has is Smokey's "Be careful what you wish for" song that came at the closing credits of night one, and Otis' interview that came as a bonus on the tape. It's too bad they left those out, esp: Smokey's song. It's really pretty.

I watch the first half of the movie plus the scene where "David" jumps on stage, and then after that I know it's just gonna be one big cry, so unless I'm in the mood for that, I cut out after that part.

Jst, I don't know what's going on with the Sam BBS. It may be down just temporarily.

Y'all say hey to Judy aka Fair Lady Soul, she's our first official lurker!!! Apparently she thinks she's TOO good to post!!! LOL! HEY JUDY!!!!!!!!!

Looks like there are a lot of 1st half watchers of the movie - me included....lol! All the best parts are in the first half anyway - I always loved the part when they go on Ed Sullivan (I think that's supposed to be the Sullivan show) for the first time and the families are watching them on TV. Of course, they're singing my favorite song - "My Girl"!

Hey FLS, I haven't "seen" you since the days of the "old" Imusic board (which I miss terribly....). Hope your B&B is doing well.

Ivory, I may be dating myself but when you said that FLS was "lurking" and everyone to say hi to her, it reminded me of when I was a kid and there was a TV show called Romper Room. The host was this lady who would look into her "magic" crystal ball and "see" all of us kids in Tvland and call us by name.... "I see Ivory, I see Cynthia, I see Jonel, etc. Of course she never called my name....LOL!

Oh you all, I just woke up from the WORST nitemare! I was driving the route between where I live and where my parents live, and I had to slow down because there were all of these funeral wreathes on the road, I was having to drive around them, and there were people walking around, and I had to drive around them. I asked someone what the problem was and they said there had been a 71 car pile up and all of these people had been killed. I looked over to the opposite side of the highway and there were Bo and Terry standing around talking to Dennis. Turns out the Tempts bus and the Review's bus had been in the wreck. Since they were the only ones I could see, I spent the rest of my dream trying to find out if everyone else was ok. It turns out that no one was killed, just banged up a bit, and in the comotion O had lost some money and he was VERY upset!!!! ........ I know EXACTLY what I had before I went to bed last night and I don't plan on having any more any time soon!!!! Sheeesh!!!!

Yeah, there seems to be a problem with Yahoo today. I went to Taz' Cave and a plumber came on the screen and said he was working on Yahoo. Just wanted to tell everybody to come by for a birthday party for Taz on March 6. MYG2: Good luck analyzing Ivory's nightmare......whew! I'm glad nobody was hurt. Hey MG2, what was the significance of the funeral wreath tango?
Mygirl2  114
03-04-2002 02:10 PM CT (US)
Hey Jonel, well without having looked it up in the dream book yet (I'll do that this evening).... dreams like that usually have an opposite meaning. Since Ivory dreamt about basically death, her dream may be trying to tell her of a new beginning or "birth" in some part of her life that she may be concerned about. I'll look it up and let you know what it says tomorrow, gotta look up the flowers too, they mean something also.

New birth? LOL! Oh my gosh I must be pregnant! Ha ha, just kidding.......... I also wonder what was the significance of it being a 71 car pile up? I kept repeating that. And Dennis, Bo and Terry were wearing matching slate blue pants and turtle necks. Ugly! I wonder what that means? ..... Also, my late grandmother was in it, strange.

That's still so sad about Jakki. My calendar theme is a collection of photos of the World Trade Center and ocasionally I'll look up at it and wonder if she was inside when the photo was taken.

And I heard on the news this morning how there are people who are suing the fire fighters because they claim that the flag that the fire fighters raised belonged to them. All of this bickering is almost as sad as the tragedy itself.

I changed the look of the Lyric's site, tell me what y'all think..... I'm open to artistic critiques:

Dbaby, the people said they were concerned that, like a lot of other things associated with the WTC, that the flag might end up in the wrong hands, or be auctioned off on eBay. I can understand their logic if that is truly their motivation, but I think they are going about it the wrong way.

Glad you like the site Jonel ;-)

That song is, excuse the pun, awesome because it's the collabrorative effort of a lot of talented folks, (you, the Tempts, the band, e'rbody!) Congratulations on a VERY WELL DONE remake!

To everyone else, be sure and drop by the T-Horns site and read their history page. It will give you a lot of insight on one of the best horn sections the Tempts perform with.

..... plus, there's a photo of Bear Bryant there, and as any good Alabamian will tell you, you can never really see TOO many photos of "the Bahr!" LOL!

Ok Ivory, after finally finding my dream book, here's what it says - have to break it down to the different parts of the dream:

1. To speak to someone who is dead means you'll soon get very good news.

2. The color blue indicates liberation from worry and/or help from outside sources.

3. To dream of a famous person means you may get help from an unexpected source in attaining something that may be out of your reach or grasp.

4. according to the book: "if you had the rare experience of being aware of the number of people or things in the dream it signifies an increase in personal power and/or prestige." If you remember the number from your dream it forecasts good luck ahead possibly connected to the number or some multiple of it.

5. a crash in a dream heralds an important achievement and the louder or bigger the crash the more noteworthy will be the accomplishment.

Dang, Ivory, sounds like a damn good dream to me - pass the Arbor Mist......LOL!

Jonel, that meeting with Marva and Janet sounds like fun! I'm sorry I missed that!

MG2, the sad thing is, I've ALWAYS had these tripped out dreams. It used to scare my parents to death. I'd have a nitemare and they couldn't get me to wake up, I mean my eyes would be open, but I would still be dreaming and wouldn't recognize them. And I had a cat that was run over and they didn't want to tell me and before they DID tell me, I dreamed about it and told them. That's why I take dreams like the car pile up VERY seriously! Most of them never really happen, but there's been enough that sometimes I worry.

DBaby, if FLS and I try to meet you again in 2005, we're gonna make better plans!!!! LOL!

Ok now y'all, we're gettin' too chummy and I'm afraid folks will come in here and think they've stepped into a private chat line..... so we MUST think of something Temptation related to discuss........

Ok, it's gotta be serious now........ hmmmmm.......

I mean a VERY intellectual conversation....... high minded........none of that silly girl chit-chat.

I got one!!!!! Which Tempt is/was the finest???!!!!!! :-)

LOL!

Ivory, I didn't forget about your dream, but I've got this crazy cat that sits on ANYTHING, and I do mean ANYTHING.....LOL! If it lands on the floor, she'll sit on it, roll on it, or sleep on it - she is amazing! Anyway, I put the book on the floor by the bed - silly me! - and of course Milli, the cat found it. BUT, this time she didn't sit on it - she just knocked it under the bed, all the way to the middle! Since under the bed is uncharterd territory, I haven't been under there to get the book, but when I do we'll be back in business.....:o)!

Now, as to the cutest/finest Temptation - classics of course - hands down, that was Eddie with David running a close second. I think that with today's Temps that would go to Terry - he's definitely a cutie!

Girl, see NOW I know why we get along so well! ;-) Welcome to the "Tempts fans who are controlled by their cats," club. I've got two cats that have me, well, excuse the pun, but "you-know-what" whipped, and FLS has three. They pretty much RUN our lives. DBaby's got a cat also, only her cat is a dog. I don't think Jonel and Bo_da have cats but I'm workin' on them, I think everyone should have two cats, no more, no less (except FLS of course.) Oh just let me shut up now or I'll be talking about cats for the rest of the day. :-) But anyway, I TOTALLY understand about the book under the bed thing, LOL!

As for best looking Tempt, I'm gonna have to come back to that one, there's so many that have different looks in different ways. But for now, I will say that the one who I'm the most attracted to is ....... THEO! THEO! THEO! :-)

Hey Ivory! Send me a cat...as long as it's made out of Crystal, since I collect Crystal. I'll even take a ceramic one. I can't handle the living, breathing, and demanding live ones. I'm allergic for one thing. Cats don't seem to like me much, they usually give me attitude. LOL!

Finest Tempt??? Hmmm let's see. Eddie for past Tempt, just look at my name and figure out who the present Tempt would be. But I've got to give Terry and Ali some props too ny. Not to mention Ronny T, he's got it going on as well. (Sorry Ronna...no disrepect meant...:o) Dang that question wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. Sheesh!

Jonel, what do you mean "the problem is, it looks like it's their world," what's wrong with that? They're CATS! Of course it's their world! If I wanted to dominate something, I'd have gotten a dog. LOL! :-p

Sorry Bo_d, only a real cat will do, they kill too many of them merely for lack of space for me to approve anything but. :-(

Ok, here's my take on the Tempts' looks:
Most handsome: Bo
Cutest: Eddie
Most raw sex appeal: Paul
Sexiest: (which differs from the above because this is something that is done PURPOSEFULLY): Ali
Most take-home-to-Mom-able: Terry

all of that is in addition to Theo.

Honorable mention goes to: Otis (handsome) Glen and Damon (cute) David (sexy, in a weird, too skinny way.)

But of course I'd trade them all in for Blu any day. :-)
Jonel  158
03-08-2002 08:31 PM CT (US)
Yes, Ali-Ollie Woodson IS the sexiest Temptation. No other Tempt can do it like Ali. When Ali sings, he demands it. A woman just has to give in.

I think the sexiest Ali song is "Tempt Me," oh wait, he didn't sing that one, what about, "Elevator Eyes," no, that's not quite right either....... this sounds like a good project for me to work on, figuring out what I think is the most sexy Ali lead...... hmmm........

You know what we need to do Jonel (and anyone else who likes to compile lists and organize things like we do) we need some kind of database that lists who leads all the various songs, make it searchable. ....... put that on our "to-do" list. LOL!

Jonel and I have this running joke that we wanna have a little Tempations Information Desk, people would just call us up and we'd answer questions like "What color underwear was Otis Williams wearing when he recorded 'Don't Send Me Away'" and we'd pull a file and say, "blue." What's the name of that movie you were talking about with Maureen O'Hara in it? The one with the computer?

Yeah, well the "other" format works better on more active boards, which (except for last night, LOL!) this one isn't. You see, I suffer from "obsessive link clicking disease." You know how you can click on the messages there and it will change colors after you've "visited" it? Well, after a while on that service, I guess the messages get moved to another server or something, but you'll find that messages that changed to "viewed" change back over to the "un-viewed" color. And since I suffer from that dibilatating illness (my Dr. calls it "OLC" for short,) it just DRIVES me crazy! I've GOT to click all the links! I've actually had to spend time in an institution receiving treatment for it. If I've viewed a message, then it should STAY that way!!! AHHHH!!!!! :-)

I'm sorry, that's just the Virgo in me coming out, wanting to keep everything in order. :-)

So anyway, that's why this board is in this format....... That and the fact that FLS likes this one better and this is my little effort to get her to post more (yep, it's all Judy's fault, smile.)

Hi All. Ivory, I finally ventured into that strange world under my bed and retrieved the dream book - so keep those dreams coming! Been listening to a little EOS lately. Funny, everytime I listen to it, after not having heard it for a while, I hear something new - it's all good though. I'm distinguishing some of the voices in the background and trying to figure out who's who - of course some are easy, like Melvin. But sometimes I think I hear Paul and then realize it was David, or maybe it was Otis????. Well, I'll have a list soon of some of the songs so I'll be back with lot's of questions!

Oh JST, feel free, relax! I had been wondering where you were. What memorobilia have you been enjoying?

Hey MG2! I don't know about the dreams. You may have heard about the tragic 100 plus car pile up just outside Chattanooga last week where at least 10 people were killed? That was a little TOO similar to my dream, ya know?

I know what you mean about the background vocals. I was cleaning the house today and listening to the you-know-whos. I've noticed a lot of new things on the song "Tear Stained Letter" lately. O is coming in loud and clear on that one!

That statement might not be too true. You know that I am into the Classic Temps and there's not much memobilia to really have. Ivory, I haven't been over on ebay too much but I was watching my "Original Leads VHS" last night and poor Eddie is as thin as a rail. A good wind could come along and just blow that sweet man away, at that time. I sometimes get very teary eyed when I see the later on in life videos of him. It just doesn't seem like the same person. He got thinner and Dennis ballooned. I didn't say that. If I find anything on ebay, in my spare time, I'll let you know. Later

Alright! Wake up everybody! Things are so QUIET around here. What's up? Ivory, I'm loving the main page here. Usually I come over via an email, but this time I logged in the old-fashioned way and I really like your banner and logo for the site. I like that purple/grape color and that mellow picture of Otis with that book reprint announcement. :wtg: Too bad QuickTopic has no emoticons. Anyway. Just because the fellas went to the UK doesn't mean we can't talk about them while they're gone. I read about one of the concerts at the fourtopsforever Yahoo group. Seems that the Tempts sound guy had it more together than the Tops guy. Evidently Theo's mike was too loud and reverberated. It must be difficult to set those things up night after night. Ya gotta hand it to the behind the scenes guys doing a thankless job who can make it or break it.

Alright, here's dream question for y'all. If you had unlimited funds and could choose to book the Temptations for a private party, where would you hold it...city and place. What would you do to make it special?

I'd like to rent Pleasure Island at Downtown Disney in Orlando and invite everybody down...all expenses paid. We'd all stay at the Grand Floridian and party in the parks with our buddies all week and then have the party the last night of our stay. Now that's what I call a PARTY!

ZZZZZZzzzzzz WHO! HUH! .......... Oh Jonel, you WOKE me up!!! :-p

Seriously, thanks for the compliments. I hate to brag, but I'm happy with my little banner since I made it from scratch. Well, the photo of the Tempts isn't from scratch obviously but everything else in the photo I made with my little photo editing program. I also like the buttons, and I can say that because someone ELSE made those. :-)

Now that's a good question. If I could book the Tempts for my own private party, it would be right next to yours in the Magic Kingdom. Of course there would be several stages there for all of the different assemblages of Tempts to perform on. Then when they were through, I'd go ride "It's A Small World" with Melvin (becuase this is a fantasy and they're all alive, right?) and maybe we could be goofy and sing the song together. He just strikes me as someone who'd ride through that ride and sing the song along with the little dolls and y'all know I'm crazy anyway. ......... Then I'd ride Space Mountain with Ali. I am usually scared to death of roller coasters but I heard a funny story about him on a roller coaster and how he was screamin' so I think it would be worth the trip if I could see that first hand. .......... And then Dennis and I would cruise the park for concessions. I just love theme park concessions. When the fair comes to town, my friends go for the rides and I go for the food. :-) ......... And then O and I, well, we could figure out something to do, I don't know what ......... Then Theo and I could play chase around Cinderella's castle. .......... and then I would remember that I had a boyfriend and I'd get in the limo and go home. :-)

I think for all of the love and attention we give the Tempts, we don't give the guys that work with them enough love and attention. They aren't always as visable, but they're a part of the total package. I remember in Tunica O was having problems with his mic and the sound guy, someone help me out, I've forgotten the sound guy's name, kept having to plug Otis in over and over. O would just stand there with that smile on his face :-D as if to say, "pay no attention to the strange man that is behind me fiddleing with the back of my pants" (the mic box thing is hooked on the back of their pants you know.)

Ok, I'm going back to sleep now.

Ha Ha Ha Ha......I like your expansion of the fantasy! It wouls be awesome to ride with Melvin and Ali and cruise the park with Dennis. I think Dennis would be a fun date with a good sense of humor. I think Theo would perform at the drop of a hat....I can imagine him up on a float during the magic parade singing "When You Wish Upon a Star".

No. Theo is wearing something casual. Remember, he was with us at the party and just decided to sing on the float. Otis is supposed to have referenced Al's death in his autobiography but I couldn't find the exact page. [I really wish they had indexed that book!]Anyway, sources on the internet say that according to Otis, Al died in Florida of cirrhosis of the liver in 1978. However, I looked him up in the Social Security Death Index and the only Elbridge Bryant listed died in 1975. I'm going to check into this some more. In the meantime, here's some more info on Al: http://www.angelfire.com/la2/t4ewinformation/alabout.html

Hey everybody, It was real nice. I put them up in the LaQuinta Motel for 3 nights. I thought it was only going to be 2, but that was alright too. We shopped and made a lot of preparations on Friday and Saturday then on Sunday morning we got up went to church services and afterwards we came back to my house and had a feast. It was a very nice day, so we set tables on the patio and ate out their. Ivory, I fixed Turkey & hens and Dressing and all the fixing. I even made all the desserts everybody said they wanted. It was extremely nice. Back to reality in the morning. Later

I am new here. I have always loved the Temptations. I am 28 years old. But I learned to love the older style of music from my Dad, who was a true Temptations fan.

I wonder how Al felt about his missing out on a wonderful career with the Temptations, but maybe if he would have stayed, maybe they would not have gone as far as they did.

Hello and welcome!

I think by far the turning point for the Tempts was when Al left and David came in. With no David there would have been no "My Girl," and with no "My Girl," the Tempts might have faded into history as another "one hit wonder."
Renee  241
04-01-2002 08:51 AM CT (US)
That is very true. I can't say that I really like one Temp over another. Each added that special something to the group.

Here's a question for everyone: (I may have asked this before, but let's pretend for the sake of argument I haven't, LOL!)

What are your favorite songs the Tempts NEVER recorded but should have?

Mine are:

1. Sam Cooke's "Bring It On Home to Me," with David and Paul. The world's sexiest song would have been EVEN sexier!

2. "Daddy Sang Bass," lead by O, and with changes to the lyrics, i.e. "Melvin sang bass, Eddie sang tenor...."

3. "Sweet Home Alabama," a collaborative effort featuring Dennis, Ali, Terry and David Sea sharing lead.

There's more, but I'll have to remember them.....

Hello Renee, Ivory, JSTdot, Al's friend, How's everybody? JSTdot....that meal and weekend sounded so good. What a wonderful time you had. About Otis' leads. Hey guys, Like I said last night, back to reality. When I got home from work today my daughter and son-in-law from kansas called me and just raved about the good time that they had. I told her that, that was the best Easter I have had probably in all my life. I tell you, we really had a lot of fun those three days. Me and my two girls were like sisters and my son had to hang with the brother-in-laws. Ivory, we celebrate days but God made them all. No,the Tempts wouldn't have been one-hit wonders without "My Girl". Eventually somebody(HDH, Whitfield)would've found the formula if the Miracles didn't. The advantage the Tempts had was that there were at least three guys who could sing lead. The trick was getting out of the early '60's mode of doo-wop and putting the platform of alternating leads ala the Soul Stirrers or the Pilgrim Travelers. That's exactly why Ivory knows that "Bring It On Home" would've been perfect for David and Paul. That's a religious song turned secular.

At that point, the Tempts were the group who could do this. The Contours were never as strong vocally as the Tempts. The Miracles weren't as balanced; the Four Tops weren't as versatile vocally. The Spinners, even at Tri-Phi, could come close, but as strong as they were vocally, especially backgrounds, their leads weren't strong. When GC Cameron, then Phillipe Wynne started to lead, that what made the Spinners great.

The Tempts were too good to be one hit wonders. We can talk about why Whitfield got control of the Tempts in '66.

Hey dino!

I agree, the Tempts wouldn't have been OHW without My Girl, but I think they WOULD have been without David.

That's an interesting comparison of "Bring it On Home To Me" to a spiritual song. I know it certainly moves me! :-)

Ruffin and Kendricks once said that the songs they sung could easily be gospel. If you think about it, they're right.

I think the Tempts would've had hits w/o Ruffin, because they would be similar, then, to the Impressions with Curtis Mayfield and Jerry Butler. They did have hits after David.

Would they have had the hits if Jimmy Ruffin joined the Tempts instead of David?

"Bring It On Home" would've been great for Paul and David, but "Soothe Me" would have been just as good.

Whenever the Tempts are asked whom their musical influences are they often list "spiritual" groups. The Dixie Nightingales and the Mighty Clouds of Joy come up a lot. So I guess there's no surprise that their sound is so tightly linked to gospel.

While not a spiritual song per se, there was a song that was sung during the Civil Rights Movement that I can easily hear the Tempts singing. "In the Mississippi River," has all the parts, bass, falsetto, beautiful harmonies. As you can tell by the title, it's obviously a very sad song, but one that seems custom made for their voices. http://www.wesleyan.edu/afam/afam238/river.aiff (unfortunatley that song doesn't stream very well, if you have a high speed connection, you may want to save the file first and listen to it later.)

Hey...... the board got short again. :-(

Richard, I have the DVD and it does say 150 mins (although it says "approx.') I also have the full-length cut of the movie and both the DVD and full VHS are the same, with the excetion of the closing credits for the first night and the interview with Otis, the DVD doesn't have those. I can tell you that the last four numbers of the UPC on the DVD are 3208 and I would think that if there were two different versions, the numbers wouldn't be the same. Also, I've never heard of two different versions of the DVD. I think you're safe in getting the DVD, if it's not the full version, take it back, and gripe until they let you return it. ;-)

cut from the tv version and it was offered by n.b.c. as a two tape miniseries including the interview with otis. also if you notice the picture on the cover is different than the edited version selling in most stores today. the running time should also be more than 200 minutes easily

Ivory, I'm going to follow you over as soon as I figure out how to get in. I'm not as knowledgeable as you when it comes to surfing and finding things. Must be real nice to be so smart. That's why when I want to know something, I go to Ivory Fair. She knows everything.

Awww, you're so sweet.

But I don't think I'm so smart as much as I am experienced. I practically grew up around computers. I've been blessed in that regard.

I think all you have to do is go here: http://temptsinfo.proboards10.com/index.cg...rd=&action=register pick a user name and enter your email (which you can opt to hide from public view if you like) then follow the instructions. Also, when filling out your profile, you can include as much info. as you like, it's all optional. You will be emailed your password and after getting that, log in with that password and then you can go into your profile and change it to something that is easier to remember.

Well, Cynthia, so far I don't plan on it. I've already changed the link on my site that says "message board" to take you to the new one. This one has its advantages because it's so easy to use, and so easy to sign up on and there are no pop-ups, but in all other instances, I really like the new one better.

I am Tracey Camille Smith and I think about my favourite Temptations singers Dennis Edwards, Melvin Franklin and Otis Williams. I noticed Otis Williams talked about Marvin Gaye on the biography of Marvin Gaye.

Just in case anyone couldn't access the link to the Proboards support forum expalining what the problem is, this is what it said.......

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
RackShack has notified me that they are currently experiencing some network troubles. Right now most of our servers are inaccessable because of this.
RackShack has no ETA right now for when it will be fixed. Please sit tight and wait for them to fix the problem.
There is nothing I personally can do, as this is an issue with our Web host.
i have been gone all day-so i never knew. well, sh.... happens-my brakes went out, my recharger went out, so my cell phone went out, so the papers i delivered were off, the people changed their minds, my other deals had problems, and now the board is down. well, it'll be funny in five years from now!
my check was worng, i had to get that corrected, then they shorted me 3,000 dollars, then 350 dollars after, then i went to the bank and the teller gave me a receipt for my deposit that was 50 dollars less than the money i gave her!
What was Josephine mother's name and why was that the only time she was shown in the movie. At the end of the movie when Otis came back to Mama Rose house was Otis the same person as the beginning of the movie because he looks so different.
