Hi, It should be pointed out to all those attending with trailered boats that the Barley mow wharf slip now has a 2.1m height barrier and a much narrower entrance than it used to. Probably best to contact the canal authority for more details. 01252 370073. The Farnborough Road slip is unaffected.

I'm sure we'll all hear officially soon, but for those of us who have been stuck on bits of the Mytchett pound so far this year, you may be interested to know that the Ash Vale station bridge work closure is no longer there. We were pipped at the post to be first under the new bridge by Athai and Hunters Moon, both out for a cruise yesterday afternoon.
As far as the Vale Road bridge in Ash Vale is concerned, it looks as though all it needs now is for the road to be re-surfaced, so there should be no reason for it not to be open sometime this week as per the last report from the BCA.

I hope you don't mind, I've copied and pasted from an email I recieved as follows... I am sorry to clutter up your mailbox with another e-mail, but I now feel that this incident has become important enough to do so. Nb Holly, a 47ft hire boat from Middlewich Narrowboats was collected by a single male hirer on 9th March 2007 and due to return to base on the 23rd March. The boat did not return and there is now very serious concern for the welfare of the hirer. There has been 1 unconfirmed sighting of the boat heading from Wolverhampton locks towards Birmingham (20th March) and nothing has been seen of the boat or hirer since. This does not appear to be a normal theft of a narrowboat as the hirer has left a car at the boat yard, paid by a credit card registered to his home address, and it appears that no-one has been inside his home address since the 9th of March. I would be very grateful if all members could keep an eye out for this boat. If see / have seen it please contact Middlewich Narowboats on 01606 832460 or contact Cheshire Police on 01606 480000 quoting incident 421 24/03/2007. A picture of the boat can be seen in this thread: http://www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=8050. Red Diesel Article received from IWA --------------- Following meetings with IWA, British Marine Federation and Royal Yachting Association, as part of the budget announcements on 21st March, H M Customs & Revenue has agreed that the current lower rate of taxation of diesel used in pleasure craft will remain until 1st November 2008. From this date, fuel used for private pleasure boating will no longer benefit from the current reduced rate of duty. The change in regulations will be made by an amendment to The Hydrocarbon Oil Duties Act 1979, through the 2008 Finance Act. The exact arrangements are yet to be worked out, as H M Revenue & Customs has agreed to hold a formal consultation later in 2007. However, the budget announcement appears to provide two more summers of boating at the lower rate of taxation

Hello
I am looking for a liveaboard boat to rent or buy in the Basingstoke River Wye area. To rent I am single with two small dogs and work near Basingstoke. I would like a mooring fairly near to a car park, even within bycycling distance. Can any one help? I am also looking to buy a steel hull narrowboat over 55ft and a mooring would be a plus! Navigation Notice
Despite our best intentions by opening for the Bank Holiday, we have been scuppered by dry weather this week and by two disappointing incidents, one due to vandalism and another due to an unbooked night-time boat passage, leaving paddles open and locks blowing through St Johns.
To allow water to refill the length of the Canal, we unfortunately have to close the locks at Deepcut, Brookwood and St Johns. As a priority we will assist visiting boats off the Canal.
Ash Lock will remain open between 9am to 4pm.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused and will keep you informed as to when the situation changes.

(Email from Leigh posted by Lesley Richards) Dear All You will be pleased to hear that we received the official Certificate of Lawful Existing Use for the Dry Dock this morning, meaning it is back to business! We will work to the time / noise constraints put in place last year, but will be working with Environmental Health to look at what flexibility exists in this; we do have a moral and legal duty to operate the Dock responsibly The main thing is we are now officially legal and it can be used again! Thanks to all those who have provided information and support. Leigh

(Email message from Leigh posted by Nigel Richards) Dear All
We are pleased to announce that the Canal will be open again for navigation on Thursday 27th November! We have already been in contact with boats waiting to get back to their moorings at Bridge Barn and the River Wey. The unprecedented 22mm of rain over the weekend (more than the entire Summer) has allowed this, and has now had a chance to work down through the system.
I understand the Environment Agency are predicting a drought next Summer......
The other (good?), albeit rather frustrating news is that work on the A325 Bridge has been further delayed and the Bridge will not now close to boat traffic until 15th December at the earliest! Sorry that the goal posts keep moving on this one, but it is largely out of our hands. It may be that the Canal can remain open until Christmas. However the necessity for re-opening before Easter has been confirmed and the contractors do not anticipate a problem meeting this deadline. Please keep in touch for an update.
As advance notice, the Canal will remain open for cruising over Xmas and the New Year. However the Flights of Locks (except Ash Lock) will be closed on 24th/25th/26th December and 1st January. The Canal Centre will be closed to the public from Xmas Eve until Monday 5th January. Please book any Lock passages required over the Xmas period (27th - 31st Dec inclusive) by Tuesday 23rd December. The Duty Ranger can be sent a message (Emergencies only please!) via pager on 07666 723457 over this period.

Hello, Andy from the Canal Centre here!
Thought I'd pass on a request from Ash Parish Council who are organising a Christmas Celebrations with the real MR C making an appearance at Ash Wharf 5pm on Dec 6th. They have asked if decorated boats could attend to provide a little atmosphere. We will take one of our boats and the John Pinkerton is also attending. If anyone is interested in coming along please let me know so that I can give them an idea of numbers. There's a rumour of a prize for the best decorated boat!

I have received this info from James at Byfleet Boat Club. Any members wanting to go will be very welcome.
Weybridge River Festival
Weybridge will be celebrating 350 years of the Wey Navigation on Saturday 27th September with a gathering of boats on the River Wey in Weybridge. Plans include an appearance by horse drawn barge Iona, a re-enactment of the opening of the Old Wey Bridge, by then newly refurbished, and a procession of illuminated boats from the Thames Lock to the Old Wey Bridge and back. There will be exhibitions, stalls and gazebos and funds will be raised for Weybridge Hospital. Radio controlled model boats, face painting, and appearances by Trusty the Hedgehog and possibly Rosie and Jim should all appeal to children, as will the opportunity to hire a rowing boat or take the riverbus from the bridge to the Thames Lock.
Boaters are invited to take part by decorating their boats with bunting and dressing as traditional boaters. If you wish to take part, please contact James Bell (01932 830493) or Rodney Wardlaw (01784 437082) for further details or email byfleetboatclub@bigfoot.com.

The Water Witch pub at Odiham is no longer boat friendly, I moored at the pubs warf as usual only to find that the gate was nailed shut and a sign (only visible from the pub garden) stated "stricly no access to Canal". I carried on to the Swan! I feel that a boycott of the Water Witch is in order untill they change their attitude! What do you all think?

Hi Everyone - just received this email from the Canal Centre, please take note:
Just to let you know that, unfortunately, we have had to close the Canal to boats coming in as of yesterday. This is due to a general water shortage brought on by the recent very dry spell - just as we were hoping things were looking better over recent years! Apparently, following the wettest December and January on record we have had the driest Spring.....
Obviously the backpumping scheme means boats can still come up the Woodham Flight to Woking.
Hopefully this is just a temporary glitch - thunderstorms are predicted for Sunday and this may help. We have enough water to let visiting boats currently on the Canal off and this process will help top up the pounds on the lower flights of Locks. We will be reviewing this on a daily basis and any boats wishing to visit can contact the Office during Office hours (inc. Sat and Sun to end of September) on 01252 370073 for an update. A recorded message is available 24hrs on 01252 376523.
Please could you put this on your websites. Leigh Thornton

Having just discovered from the BCA that the Colt Hill Rally has been cancelled due to 'lack of interest', can someone explain to me how this can be known, as pre-booking for the event was not obligatory. This news features on nobodies web site, let's just hope people find out as I did. As it was said at the AGM that the Fox & Hounds would probably be cancelled this year, it's not a very rosy looking future for us, is it? And we had Yen Koh's decoration all planned and ready too ...

I picked up the Christmas Dinner menu from the Fox & Hounds and reckon it sounds excellent value at £17.99 per head, with choice of 6 starters, 7 mains (inc vegetarian options), plus dessert choice, coffee & mints. I'd be quite happy to organise, but would prefer that people make contact with me, rather than have to chase them. A date would need to be agreed between ourselves & the pub, & an idea of numbers, so that we could make a provisional booking. Well, I hope not too many of you are planning an autumn cruise between now and the 8th October, because you will not be able to pass much further than the Fox & Hounds at Fleet. Boats longer than 43' beware! (we can turn Merlin at NEHWACA) The canal is to be closed just the Fleet side of the swing bridge at Zebon Copse. There is a culvert being bored under the canal bed. Unfortunately it appears that most of us did not receive any notification.

Yes Lesley, it was a lovely weekend and many thanks to Dave and all who worked so hard to organise it. Several years ago I wrote a letter about the lift bridge pointing out that it was a health and safety issue and the engineer went to look at it and improvements were made so complaints do work. The difficulty with phone calls is to ensure they get to the right person but if there are enough some of them should be acted on.

We had a really enjoyable weekend at Odiham, but it was marred a little when we heard how hard it is to drop the lift bridge, so decided to try it for ourselves. Nigel said that it went up easily enough but bringing it down was ridiculously difficult and he doubted that any member of the fairer sex would be able to even move the windlass. So here is the number you need to ring to make your complaint: Area Surveyor North Tel: 01256 764444. I left name and address but could not be promised a reply as there are a lot of staff on leave, so will probably be ringing again next week! Please take the time to get the message across.

It has been suggested that it would be useful for visitors to see a hints and suggestions page on the site eg good places to moor, easily accessible shops etc. If you have any ideas for the part of the canal you know best can you jot them down and hand them to any committee member.
Don't forget those cakes for Colt Hill!

We will be going to Bridge Barn though the theme for the decorated boat competition doesn't sound easy (Fools!). Some of you will know that Pablo and Jill went on the BCN cruise over the midsummer weekend this year organised by WRG.They were accompanied by their daughter and son-in-law and have just heard that their log of the weekend gained first prize! Don't forget the AGM everyone- details on the diary.

Yes the ice was a problem both on Christmas Eve and over the New year on the Woking Pound. Happy New Year to everyone. I am working on the club magazine at the moment. If anyone has any contributions I would be delighted to receive them in the next week (kathy.pyrford@btinternet.com) What about a few recollections of your best boating experiences in 2001-just a few lines will do.Cheers kathy

I will not be able to attend the dinner. I hope you have an enjoyable time and a very pleasant Christmas. Plans are well in hand for the Bridge Barn and Colt Hill Rally so do not forget to mark these events in your boating calender.

Having tried a taster of David's hot mulled wine, I can highly recommend it, but not guarantee that you will then be able to get unaided to the Fox and Hounds!
