A blocked or heavily crowned lane may make it easy to hit the pocket, but it doesn't necessarily mean you will score from it. If there is a lot of oil on the lanes, this increases the amount of possible carry down into the pin deck, which can lead to all sorts of weird splits and odd pins being left.

I was bowling in the counties, and the amount of single pins and splits that were left off excellent balls (and not just by Lancashire I have to add) that went straight in the pocket, was unbelievable. so just because the ball goes where you want it to, doesn't necessarily mean you will get the result you want. I know, from personal expereince!!!! :-(

Terrior - you still say a block will put the ball into the right area - sorry but which ball? the white dot or the strong reactive? - Yes if you are good enough to find the block and use it(you do have to hit a mark), you then have to have the ball or the control on your revs to be able to make YOUR ball make it to the pocket at the right angle - frankly if you are good enough to spot and use the oil pattern like that I think you would be hitting the pocket consistantly anyway.

To the person who asked how it can only work for one type of bowler - see above plus a second arrow block, lets say, is no use to a straight bowler, a back up bowler, someone who bowls out and back (across the lane)or a lefty. If you move the ball a lot you may find you cross the head pin every time from the block - if you move it less you may not make the pocket - as above, you have to have the ability and the equipment to use a block successfully - If you have those - you don't need a block!

there is a lot of speculation about lanes and conditions here you do get scoring conditions at different centers and hard conditions at others. But when all is said and done you have to be a consistent bowler that hits the mark a lot more than lower ave bowlers and spare well(spares still make good games).Easier conditons can make an ave 170 bowler ave 190..but can make a 200 ave bowler ave 220 because he is a better bowler to start with. I think the guidelines should be how you do in ranking events because you dont really ever get easy conditions there. The point i'm making is if you gave me Tiger Woods golf clubs would i be as good as him.....doubt it hahahahahaha

But the question is Mo....... If you gave Tiger Woods a set of house clubs... would he be as good.

So how much is skill and how much is equipment......

To block or not to block?? At the end of the day regardless of the condition everyone involved has to bowl on the same lanes. I myself prefer dry lanes, however I find I am almost always alone on this. However having bowled at White City I was forced to re-assess my opinion of a dry lane, because they definately were not lanes that I liked!

The reason I like to bowl, is because each time you step onto a lane the result is different. Consistancy is the name of the game, but sometimes we are presented with a condition that tests us and we have to adjust to improve.

I also find it insensitive to label these lanes as blocked, does this mean that Chris' 300 was an easy one??? I think not, 12 strikes are 12 strikes, to not let the nerves get to you (at least) is a major achievment, lets not forget that the last ball bowled, was rolled over a different condition to the first, because lanes constantly change!

It is in deed wrong to demean Chris's 300 by trying to say the lanes were Blocked" or "easy". As we dont even know who the person suggesting that is, it is even more pointless as the person concerned my not have been anywhere near Dustable on the day. In fact it is quite possible thatit is someone who is merely jealous of the achievement and trying to make themselves feel better by saying it was easy.
The next person to get an easy 300, let me know - I won't hold my breath.

Why can't people be happy for each other in this county.

I witnessed every ball Chris bowled this weekend and not one looked like it wasn't going to strike.

If the lanes were easy, why didn't every other bowler in the comp bowl a 300.

Because the never bowled exceptional like Chris did.

Chris had never done a 300 before that, so people that have will know the pressure the amount of nerves Chris had to go through to get that 300.

So people who are making excuses for it, your just jealous.

Chris never decided the lane pattern on the day, he turned up and paid his money just like everyone else.

So please shut up and let Chris enjoy his 300, he might never get another chance to enjoy one.

mal..i think that skill has a lot to do with it, but the equipment also means a great deal why do we get custom made balls and Tiger Woods custom made club because i would'nt score what i do with house balls and and he would'nt score as well with a hackers set of clubs. Even with the best equipment you still have to have a great deal of skill to attain a very consistent high standard of scoring. I cant understand anyone knocking a good 300 which Chris got cos we'd all like one.

Please don't come on and tell everybody how easy the lanes were in Malaysia.
