Problems with ISO 9000:2000

If this is your first visit to Quick Topic, be sure to read the simple instructions above!

This purpose of this document is to initiate a review, by members of The Business Improvement Network around the world, of actual and potential problems with ISO 9000:2000.

This follows comments by ISO itself, and by other key bodies, which imply that there is concern at the highest levels. You can read about the concerns at http://www.bin.co.uk/eicherdir

I would like you not only to comment on the concerns summarised below but also to add other concerns that you see are significant.

If this discussion generates sufficient interest, we will move on to discuss solutions to the problems.

View comments on this itemAdd your comment on this item2 Problem: some certification bodies are acting improperly by issuing ISO 9000 certificates without proper audits, offering to write ‘quality manuals’, selling certificates, mixing certification with consultancy, and claiming to have been approved by ISO.

View comments on this itemAdd your comment on this item3 Problem: ISO 9000 is really just a model, but is called a standard [more precisely a series of standards]. This encourages people to believe that meeting the ‘standard’ guarantees a high standard of quality and service, which is untrue

View comments on this itemAdd your comment on this item4 Problem: ISO 9000:2000 is proving to be beyond the competence of some certification bodies and their auditors.

View comments on this itemAdd your comment on this item5 Problem: Many organisations are driven to obtain ISO 9000 certification for the wrong reason: the bureaucratic requirement of an existing or potential customer. This opens the door to charlatans.
