geeks don't do outdoors. They certainly don't friggin fly airplanes.

Three words for you, Jude. Bull. Fuckin'. Shit.

Of the engineers I work with, one flies a plane of his own (a seaplane, no less), and three ride motorcycles. That's four out of five. In my experience, self-proclaimed geeks LOVE the challenge of "extreme sports," including mountain climbing, skiing, flying, and motorcycling.

Being in the Flight Simulation industry I wanted to give my viewpoint - a hobby has nothing to do with making or breaking a relationship. You that are critical of any hobby, or feel that a hobby can negatively effect a relationship, need to reflect on your own interests and the amount of time and $ that you expend persuing your interests (hobby). If you don't have a hobby, I feel sad for you. Bottom line is that a hobby will never make or break a relationship - only the persons involved can do that.

I am frequent reader of Boing Boing, but often don't get to the Discuss section of the links. Yesterday, I was pleased to see that my friend's husband's website was listed. Thinking being listed as an "extreme nerd" was a really cool thing, I sent her a link to the site...and then today I read the Discuss section. Good God, Jude, am I embarrassed!

I do know these people. They are very cool and have different interests, but they both love flying. And I can assure you that they are very much in love, not that it is any of our business. Frankly, even if you're just being funny, your cracked view on love relationships reveals way more about you than it does about them.

Thank you PissOn, for your timely reminder that its all very well us second-guessing about Matt and Lori's relationship, but we may be doing them both a grave misjustice in our pontifications. (Incidentally you rebutted our suggestion that Lori was a geekgirl with the counter-allegation that she 'married him for the money'... i much prefer the former rationale)

so i've taken matters into my own hands and emailed matt@737sim.com to ask him exactly how his relationship survives the obsession that is his hobby. Matt, any time you want to jump in here.

Judetheobscure, btw, I'm with you on the geeks-begetting-geeks thing. The little merklefords (!) are bound to have flight sims marching through their vains, like giant, radioactive rubber pants.

Oddly, all of the clouds vaguely resembled Anna Kournikova..

Ya know Jude, I'm pretty sure that your just joshing around here, but still, I'm pretty infuriated by such speculation..

I mean come on, how dare you. Maybe Lori loves that fact that her husband is geeky and intelligent. Maybe she's somewhat of a geek herself. Maybe she loves him for his inventiveness and creativity. I really don't know.

But you looked at the pictures and 'know' Lori's not a geek and you know exactly why she married him. I mean, Geek girls are pudgy and splotchy. Lori is pretty, and she must have just married him for the money or something.

Well excuse me, but I see a successful, intelligent tinker. They type of geek that makes the world go around. The type of geek with a little too much free time on their hands (possibly because they are so successful) .

The type of geek that I read boingboing to learn about in fact.

I know nothing else about him, except him seems to be having fun. Unless you know something else, I would personally appreciate it if you took your speculations about his wife and a vibrator someplace else.

I might be inclined to agree, except after looking at the wedding photos, it is clear Lori is NOT a "sim-head". She married this guy because he is a world class lighting guy. Doing the Emmys and so forth, mucho bucks. To her, the "sim thing" is a passing phase. As soon as he gets Lori knocked up, shes gonna expect him to throw a dust cloth over that "sim" and enter into the real world. Little does she know that Matt is looking forward to having a kid too, so he can have someone small enough to pull wires through the cockpit. Geeks having geeks, and on it goes.

maybe lori buys into the sim thing? perhaps she always dreamed of being a stewardess?

Heh, they could dress up and have 'flight sim' themed dinner parties with the neighbours, serving portion control roast beef and 2 veg.

You guys are missing the point, geeks don't do outdoors. They certainly don't friggin fly airplanes. Yikes! "It moves and stuff, and it's in the *real* air." They like things they can completely control, and something preferably very close to the couch. Real airplanes experience turbulence, wind shear and things like falling out of the sky at high speeds. No self-respecting geek would subject himself to that level of realism.

The REALLY scary part is this guy just got married. Can you imagine how alone this chick is going to be once he loses interest in her "wares"? I can hear it now...

"Where is Matt?" the girlfriend asks.

"Oh, he's in the 'sim' again. He said he's not coming out until he can handle a four G dive and keep the cabin pressure stable. Could take weeks".

"Uhhhh, want my vibrator, Lori?" girlfriend asks cringing.

"I thought you'd never ask. Better yet, lets go hit the bar for the real thing".

"Errr, what about Matt?"

"Oh, don't worry about him, he's got a cooler and a portable toilet in the 'sim', he could be in there for days"

"Oh boy, in that case, we'll use your house if we pick anyone up"

"Sure thing, the last place Matt would look for me would be in the bedroom".

Hehe, besides, Matt probably already built a "sex slave sim", and no longer needs Lori.

" he could go and build a real plane from a kit and fly for real. Which would not only be more sensible, but also a great deal more fun in the long run."

Maybe for the same money he could run out and buy a Cessna or the like, but it's hardly a 737, even a simulated one. And Cessnas suck - super slow, mild weather only, and then don't get me started on maintenance, upkeep, and storage.

This far into that simulator though, he could add hydraulic actuators (a piece of cake for a vato at a lowrider shop) underneath and actually have some physical motion!

You'd think with all that ingenuity, and presumably what all this is costing him in time and money, he could go and build a real plane from a kit and fly for real.
Which would not only be more sensible, but also a great deal more fun in the long run.

I'm not sure where it comes on the scale, but we have a friend who built a Morgan car in his front room. It was only after he finished that he realized it wouldn't fit through the door...

Apparently, full-size personal flight-sim
cockpits are the terminal stage for
certain types of geeks.
