Thank you for saying that. It's also worth adding that many of these "research" reports are PAID for by someone with a dog in the fight, i.e. a ringtone company. So IDC or Giga or whoever has incentive to show good numbers.
And, as you pointed out, no one ever goes and back checks these, so they're really as reliable as Jean Dixon and the National Enquirer.

Speaking of ringtones, anyone from Sprint PCS out there who can tell me why I can't download ringers for my Samsung A460 off of ANY site? And, as a business user, I'm ineligible for Sprint's "Ringers and More" unless I upgrade to a Sprint phone plan with "Vision." Grrr.

This is a really sad story. Sad because it's conceivable that people might spend $400M a year on irritating ringtones for their cell phones, sad because there is a cellphone ringtone industry, and sad because people will probably be charged with "pirating" cheezy Mission Impossible tunes.
Sure the research numbers may be greatly exaggerated, but this should be a story for the Onion, not a serious issue. What's next, playing royalties for whistling?

At one point there were at least 10 different ringtone sites on the web, all of them were completely free. All ringtones are is an ascii file dictating note and duration, or in some phones midi files. (mine takes any *.wav you can throw at it). These normally get sent to the phone via SMS.
All of a sudden, every one of the sites disappeared and were replaced by a few new ones, wanting to charge you half a dollar (or so) to download a 30kb data file. It's a scandal.
Forget "piracy". These files are not copyrighted, if anything the original owner of the song has more control than the originator of the ringtone. It's crazy, in a world that is clearly moving to "free" media, there are those starting new businesses on the old mode. I just hope they don't encourage more law changes to try and make their business profitable.

Any decent phone lets you program your own ringtones. Mine plays a snippet of the theme from The League of Gentlemen, which only took me 10 minutes to bash in.

Get one that does wavs. You can sample anything you want as a ringtone, including voice. Completely free and DIY, or you can download thousands of ready made ones on the net.

Yes, I do believe paying the carrier for ringtones is a scam. I personally know one of the founders of ToneThis and it's great since I don't have to pay for each ringtone.
One day this should all be free...
